Lavrenv lvr'ini f, Boris Andreevi. - Scrittore russo (Cherson 1891 - Mosca 1959). Nei racconti (Veter "Vento", 1924; Sorok
pervyj "Quarantunesimo", 1926) e drammi (Razlom "La rottura", 1927; Vragi "I nemici", 1929; Za tech, kto v more "Per quelli che
sono in mare", 1945) rappresent, con romantica predilezione per i problemi individuali, le lotte rivoluzionarie e la vita dei soldati di
terra e di mare dopo la Rivoluzione e durante la seconda guerra mondiale. Born July 5 (17), 1891, in Kherson; died Jan. 7, 1959, in
Moscow. Soviet Russian writer and playwright. Son of a literature teacher. Lavrenev graduated in law from Moscow University in
1915. He fought in World War I (191418) and in the Civil War (191820). His literary debut came with the publication of his poetry
in 1911, and his first story was published in 1924. The novellas The Wind, The Forty-first (both 1924; made into motion pictures in
1927 and 1956), and A Story About Something Simple (1927) were devoted to events of the Great October Socialist Revolution and
the Civil War. Lavrenev was drawn to heroic characters and the elemental, romantic aspect of heroism (the wind image). In the late
1920s, Lavrenev wrote primarily about the intelligentsia, the people, and the Revolution (the novella The Seventh Fellow-traveler,
1927), as well as the fate of culture and the arts (the novella Wood Engraving, 1928). His prose is dramatic, with intricate plotting and
character development through direct action. The play Break (1927; staged by many theaters at home and abroad) epitomized
Lavrenevs artistic concerns. He treated the Revolution and the heroic character in a thorough and new way, depicting heroism in its
everyday rather than its extraordinary manifestations. This attitude was reflected in such later works as the novella Big Earth (1935)

and the plays The Song of the Black Sea Sailors (1943) and To Those in the Sea! (1945). Lavrenev criticized bourgeois society in the
novel The Fall of the Itl Republic (1925), the novella A Strategic Mistake (1934), and journalistic articles, pamphlets, and feuilletons.
He received the State Prize of the USSR (1946 and 1950) and was awarded two orders and several medals.

Rifacimento di un film del 1927, "Il quarantunesimo" un dramma con ambientazione bellica di produzione
sovietica. Diretto da Grigori Chukhrai (questo il suo secondo film), parla di una giovane donna cecchino
dell'Armata Rossa, Maria (Izolda Izvitskaya), e del gruppo dei rivoluzionari bolscevichi al quale appartiene.
Dopo aver preso prigioniero il tenente Vadim (Oleg Strizhenov), ufficiale delle forze contro-rivoluzionarie
dell'Armata Bianca, i soldati si mettono in marcia verso il Lago d'Aral e cominciano a perire uno ad uno, uccisi
dalla spietatezza del deserto. In pochi sopravvivono fino alla meta, ma non appena il loro viaggio arriva al
termine, Maria incaricata di scortare il prigioniero con una barca al di l del Lago. Su di loro si abbatte una
tremenda tempesta e tutto l'equipaggio muore; si salvano solamente la ragazza e Vadim che, naufraghi su una
sperduta isola, si innamoreranno l'uno dell'altra.
A met fra guerra (la prima parte) e film romantico (la seconda), "Il quarantunesimo" ci mostra un tormentato
amore separato da profonde differenze ideologiche. Cos' pi forte? Il rapporto fra Maria e Vadim oppure la
loro fedelt ai rispettivi schieramenti? Il finale, combattuto, tragico, splendido e profondo al tempo stesso, parla
da solo. E' una storia dura e narrata in modo estremamente realistico, ma
che non manca di emozionare nel racconto della storia dei due protagonisti,
con quell'alternarsi di repulsioni dovuti ad aspri dibattiti su temi politici e
sociali, e di inevitabili attrazioni, in pieno stile "Da qui all'eternit", film di
Fred Zinnemann uscito tre anni prima (certo penso al romanticismo in
mezzo alla guerra, ma ovviamente anche alle affettuose sequenze sulla
spiaggia). La regia di Chukhrai enfatizza l'idea della durezza delle
condizioni nella Russia post-Rivoluzione d'Ottobre e dell'amore dei due
protagonisti; grande l'impatto visivo dei diversi paesaggi, molto ben
sfruttati: il deserto, il villaggio, il Lago, la capanna del naufragio... Da notare inoltre l'ottima fotografia in
Sovcolor di Sergei Urusevsky.
"Il quarantunesimo", che ha ricevuto il Premio Speciale al Festival di Cannes 1957, tratto dal libro di Boris
Lavrenyev. Il titolo si riferisce al tenente Vadim, che, per Maria, sarebbe appunto il suo quarantunesimo nemico
da uccidere.
