It might be said that the IndustrialRevolution first occurred in Englandbetween 1760 and 1840, but it wasalso a radical process of social andeconomic change rather than a merehistorical period.
The Industrial Revolution
Energy was a major impetus for thisconversion from an agricultural societyto an industrial one. Until James Wattperfected the steam engine, which wasdeployed rapidly starting in the 1780s,animal and human power were theprimary sources of energy.

During the last decades of the century,electricity and gasoline-fueled enginesfurther expanded productivity. A factorysystem with machine manufacturingand divisions of labor was developed.New materials, particularly iron andsteel, became available.
