5 Demands to Restore DeKalb County School System
By Viola Davis RN BSN
I.

Governance

Recall and elect a new Board of Education that will serve the entire county of DeKalb as “one”
and
place the needs of our children “first”.

Elect a new Board of Education whose first course of action is to complete the elevenRequired Actions mandated by SACS to save the accreditation of the DeKalb County SchoolSystem.

Elect a new Board of Education that will hire a well qualified permanent Superintendent from
“outside” the system to manage our school system
and eliminate decade long problems thathave plagued our school system for years.

II.

Finance

DeKalb County is a “donor school system” that has over $100
million dollars removed from theschool system for over 6 years to redistribute to other school systems throughout Georgia
through the use of the state’s outdated QBE formula
(Local Five Mill Share) and out of controlAusterity cuts.
We demand that the millage above the 20 mills (3.98 mills) be returned toDeKalb County School System due to its financial crisis and inability to continue subsidizingother school systems so as not to harm the education of the children attending DeKalb Countyschools.

The state of Georgia has systematically placed over 70% of the Refugees in the county of DeKalbwithout adequate financial support. Such actions have caused undue harm on the DeKalbCounty School System particularly within the Clarkston Cluster.
We demand the State of Georgia reevaluate the last 6 years of funding specifically designated for Refugee relocationand refund DeKalb County and the City of Clarkston for funding it did not receive for socialservice, police and educational services.
