Who Am I? WHY AM I HERE?
by Maurice Turmel PhD
"Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of the party." That was a familiar phrase back when Iwas learning to type, and leads me to the following story.Once upon a time there was a young man named Moe. He came into the World no knowing who he wasor what his purpose here was to be.Moe struggled all his life to "get it" but he kept falling down again and again, as he had so many timesbefore because he wanted to know it all and he couldn't. That brings him and us to this juncture in Life, trying to figure out who we are and what is our Life Purpose? Our subject Moe, has been up and down this road many times and still has to learn that he is OK being just who he is. Who he is, in fact, is just perfect, thank you. He has a lot to learn yet about that particular point. So here We go again, traveling on this journey through Time, trying to figure out who We are and lookingfor "it" out there, usually in our accomplishments and achievements. If I were to say to you: "you are a person of great authority," who would you believe? I, as the personsaying it to you, or you as the person denying it."Who defines us? you ask. "Well I do" should be the answer. But clearly that is not the case. For example, I define myself through my work? "Yes!" Through my accomplishments? "Yes!" And throughmy failures? "Why yes, that too!"So I define myself by how others see me and I myself adopt this external viewpoint. I validate certainexperiences as Good and others as shameful, decrepit, unacceptable and so on. Again, I use that sameexternal ference point to determine who I am.If I want to change who I am, I change the accomplishments column. I try on new things. I grow; Iprosper; I may even thrive. But in the end I am still me, standing on the outside, looking at me from thatexternal point of view. How do I change this? I have to change my point of view. I need to adopt an internal viewpoint, thatdescribes me as I am, through characteristics such as: kind, gentle, caring, openminded, openhearted, alert, giving and so on. If these are My characteristics, then they define me better than any externalcircumstances could. Because I can change externals, new house, office, car, job etc. But I can't reallychange internal characteristics, can I?Well perhaps we can. But more on that later on.What I'm about to share with you is a Secret, handed down through the ages as perhaps only the Sagesof all time knew for a fact. I am a Being of Light. I come to this Earth for a purpose. I live that purpose on aday to day basis. And I struggle with who I am , what I've become and what I'd like to be.I want to change things for the better. So I have to tweek the knobs somehow. Those knobs that are onlyaccessible to a Being of Light who's Earthly purpose is about Self-Discovery, through accomplishmentsand new beginnings. Yes, we're talking about "characteristics" again. You see we've come back aroundto this very point.

As a Being of Light I can change things that are mine to change, but can I ever change my Beingness? Not surprisingly, the answer is No. That state was given to me, us, by a Higher Order Being, God, theGreat Creator, most likely. And He/She decreed me as a Being of Light. Can't change that. I am what Iam!So who am I then? God incarnate? Or am I something else altogether? I don't know. Let's just pause for a moment anf forget that we are Beings of Light. Then the question: "why am I here?" comes up again, doesn't it?Over and over, this very same question keeps repeating itself.I am here for a purpose, perhaps? Who's purpose is it? Is His/Her purpose mine and mine alone? Do Idefine that purpose on my own, or do I grab Him by the shirt collar and say: "Hey Lord, why am I here?""You are here for a reason," He would say."And that reason is what?" you counter."Why you have to discover that now, don't you?" And once again, you get away with nothing. He doens't answer directly, no. But He assures you that you have the answer. You have a certain groupof possibilities before you that you could activate. And those that are activated will determine who you arethis time around. We've been here before, apparently.OK, so we're here for a purpose. He/She alleges we can know that purpose, which is somewhat flexible, but with certain reference points as characteristics, there is a base that seems fixed. So then we move tothe next stage of evolving, escalating and expressing that inner YOU (The Great Creator) as Us.There is method to this madness, we are assured. I have yet to find a loophole in any of this, try as Imight. If He/She says there is a purpose - then it is so! There is such a Purpose.Discovering Who You Are essentially is that purpose. That's the end game, frustrating as it may seem.We are here for a purpose. We are alive with such purpose and that purpose expresses itself out throughour Being. If we want to know that purpose, we need to pay attention as to how we express characteristics, such askindness, caring, curiosity, openmindedness ect. Otherwise we miss uncovering who we are at that allimportant characteristic level.Let Your Purpose be that which you express, as yourself, your inner Being - that Being of Light. He/Sheis here to shape you, guide you and push you along the way. He/She is here for His/Her purpose, which isto guide you along yours. This is very important. Because, as you shall see, this mentoring capacity, coming from the inside of us,keeps us moving forward, as we should. And each of us has the capacity to carry this purpose forward inour communion with others, influencing their purpose as well as our own. This is our story, whichincludes helping them out with theirs.
