14. What is the function of a ribosome?

- The assembly of Proteins

15. What process takes place in the rough endoplasmic reticulum?

- The site where lipid components of the cell membrane are assembled, along with
proteins and other materials that are exported from the cell.

16. Describe the role of the Golgi apparatus.

- To modify, sort, and package proteins and other materials from the ER for storage in the
cell or secretion outside the cell.

17. Other than the nucleus, which two organelles contain their own DNA? What
explanation has Lynn Margulis proposed to account for the presence of DNA in these
organelles?
- Two organelles that contain their own DNA are the Mitochondria and plastids like
Chloroplast. Lynn Margulis proposed the Endosymbiontic Hypothesis.

18. Name and describe the two types of structures that make up the cytoskeleton
-Microfilaments and microtubules are two of the principal protein filaments that make up
the cytoskeleton. Microfilaments are threadlike structures made of a protein called actin.
They form extensive networks and produce tough, flexible framework that supports cells.
Microtubules are hollow structures made up of proteins known as tubulins. In many cells
they play critical roles in maintaining shape.

19. Briefly describe the structure of a cell membrane. How does the cell membrane affect
the contents of a cell?
- The cell membrane is double-layered with a lipid bilayer and has many channels and
pumps that move material across the cell membrane. The cell membrane affects the
contents of the cell since it regulates what enters and leaves the cell and also provides
protection and support.
