A Close Look at the Five Schools of Software Testing
Software-testing experts often disagree withone another and for sound reasons, but upuntil 2003 it was difficult to have a conversa-tion with a fellow tester for lack of a commonframe of reference. This all changed whenBret Pettichord and some colleagues formu-lated a concept of schools, the Schools of Software Testing. The Schools of Software Testing began asfour and has since expanded to five schools:Analytic, Standard, Quality, Context-Driven,and Agile. The schools are meant to categorize beliefsand how they influence our tactical approachto testing, but they are not an absolute. Likeidentifying with a political party, it can be dif-ficult to align oneself with any single school.Rather ironically, the Context-Driven Schoolfocuses on the context of a project, so some-times the beliefs and the approach mightvary. Also, there may be people who, just likethe political parties, prefer to classify them-selves as independents. Still others mayreject the idea of a label altogether.
