[scene opens up with two characters, Mike

and Joel
, standing outside (preferably, a park),
who are just talking about life.]
Mike:
So, Joel.
Joel:
Yes, Mike?
Mike:
Heard there’s a new girl in our town. People say she and her unclehold some sort of – powerful mist.
Joel:
Powerful what?
Mike:
Like....some sort of friction. She can change people. In a good way.She can give “emotion” to any person she desires to.
Joel:
You mean like those “fairy tale” emotions? Such as Happy, sad, mad, and so on?
Mike:
Yes. Exactly. Though it still remains to be seen. There was anincident at the salon this morning. Word has it Mrs. Haircutter wasdoing back flips, also using the emotion of laughing. It was crazy.
Joel:
Crazy? Explain yourself.
Mike:
Um....buggidy-buggidy-boo.
Joel:
Oh, that kind of crazy. It’s so hard, knowing we don’t have any of those “emotions” the new girl has.
Mike:
Well, maybe we can at least see if she can –
[Rainy, new girl, enters scene as Mike and Joel turn to face her]
Rainy:
(Happy)
Well, hi there. It’s Mike and Joel, right?
Mike:
That’s right....um.....

Rainy:
Rainy. Plain, old Rainy. Wow. You boys look so....bored.
Joel:
This is how we all act in this town. You obviously must be anoutsider because of your powers.
Rainy:
Powers? What kind of “powers”?
Joel:
Well, laughing, crying, um....insulting.
Rainy:
Uh, that last one I don’t even use. And those aren’t my “powers”.They’re emotions.
(Pause)
What? Don’t tell me you guys don’thave any emotions? That’s just --
(Laughs)[Mike and Joel stare at Rainy]
Rainy:
Oh. None of you do?
Mike:
No one in this town. We’re all considered drones. Tell us, how didyou bring emotion to Mrs. Haircutter this morning?
Rainy:
Huh? Well, She greeted me outside the hair salon on my way toschool. She wanted to shake my hand and after a second or so, shestarted acting happy. Next thing I know, she screaming, “I’m sohappy” and doing back flips all over the place.
Joel:
Ah. So maybe if you shake our hand, maybe you can give us someof that “emotion”. It would sure make things interesting. Of course, if you want to, that is.
Rainy:
Uh, sure. Though I don’t need to necessarily need to shake your hand to do so. You see, on my way home from school, I bumpedinto this guy, talking on the phone. When I was walking away fromhim, he was cursing up a storm. I mean, he was already before I bumped into him, but it was with that emotion that made him actlike a psychopathic killer.
Mike:
Yeah, I see. Well, can you try now? Please?
Rainy:
(Smiles)
Sure, hold on a sec.
[Rainy touches Mike on the head]
Rainy:
(Pause)
So, how do you feel?

Mike:
Well....Um....
(smiles)
great.
(Laughs)
Oh, great! I’ve felt nothinglike this before. Do you think it’s temporary or permanent?
Rainy:
Most likely permanent. You’re emotions are who you really are.You all grew up here with nothing but pure boredom. But no more. Now that you have your emotions attached, you can go and give people the gift. Try it on Joel, now.
Mike:
Oh, yeah! Right!
(To Joel)
Joel?
Joel:
Yes, Mike?
Mike:
Are you ready for the change of your life?
Joel:
For the last friggin’ time, yeah. Come on.
Mike:
Alright, alright. Here goes.
[Mike pats Joel on the head]
Mike:
Well?
Joel:
(Angry)
Well what? You idiot! This was a big waste of time! Nothing has changed! I can’t believe you! I can’t believe that youwould -- what? What the hell? It worked.
(Pause)
It worked!
(Laughs)
Mike:
(Laughs)
See! I told you! I told you it would work!
Joel:
Oh yeah!
(Pause, looks at watch)
Oh shit! I’m going to be late for supper! My parents are going to kill me! I gotta go! Thanks again,Rainy!
(Runs, exits)
Mike:
Wait up, Joel! How are they going to kill you?! They don’t haveany emotions! Well, not yet at least!
(To Rainy)
I gotta go, too. Now that Joel has emotions, he’s most likely to get hit by a car onthe way home. I have to go protect him.
(Pause)
Hey, should meetthis guy named Sunny. He’s a drifter, so he could show upanywhere. When he does, give him the gift. He can sure use it.
Rainy:
I will, Mike. See you later!
Mike:
Bye! And thanks again! See you later!
(Runs offstage, exits)
