The author, Ernest Hemingway, describes walking in Paris, France.

I always got very hungry when I walked in ___(1)_____ Paris. The ___(2)____ bakery

shops had [have] such __(3)_____ things in the ___(4)_____ windows. __(5)______ people

ate [eat] outside at ___(6)____ tables on the ____(7)____ sidewalk, so I saw [see] and smelled

the ____(8)____ food. Sometimes I had no ____(9)_____ money. Then the best place to go

was the Luxembourg gardens where I saw and smelled nothing to eat from the Place de

l’Observatoire to the rue de Vaugirard. On the way, I always stopped at the Luxembourg

museum.

The ___(10)____ paintings in the ___(11)____ museum looked beautiful to me because I

was so hungry. I wondered if one ___(12)____ painter, Cezanne, was also hungry when he

painted. Now, I think he was. He was not hungry because he was poor (like me). He was

hungry because he forgot [forget] to eat. All he did [do] was paint. Maybe Cezanne was

hungry in a different way.1
