News From Kindergarten – Miss Cindy
I hope you all had a nice three day week‐end. I would like to thank thewonderful parent helpers who came on our field trip to the Children’s Museumand helped at the Valentine’s Day celebration. The children loved both events. This week the sound “th” will be the sound focus. We will brainstorm “th”words and create lists onto a thumb! Kindergartners learned about theAmerican flag, as well as information about George Washington. The famousAfrican Americans Matthew Hensen, George Washington Carver and BessieColeman are part of our Black History Month celebration; be sure to ask your child about these extraordinary people. The Book, Bunny Day is the literaryfocus and many work time centers are based on this book. On Friday, we willmeet with our third grade buddies to make bookmarks of their favorite authorsand illustrators. These will be displayed in the glass display case in the upper hall during the month of March. I will be reading the book,
Cloudy With AChance of Meatballs
, today and everyone will make a great project based on thebook.I do not have any parent volunteer on Wednesdays; if you would like to come inand help out during writing and work time, please let me know. Thanks.

News from Kindergarten ‐ Miss Sarah
I hope you had a lovely holiday weekend. It is hard to believe it is alreadyWednesday! We had such a fun time last Friday visiting the Children’s Museumand then enjoying a Valentine’s celebration. Thanks to all of you whovolunteered and donated goodies. Boy, do we have a great classroomcommunity! This week we are learning about both President Washington andLincoln. We are beginning our new math unit which focuses on counting usingourselves subjects. At home, try counting with your child, starting with arandom number lower than 30 and counting to at least to 30. This is animportant kindergarten skill. We are beginning our study of the story BunniesDay in worktime. “Are” and “They” are two Word Wall words that are tricky for our students. Any support you can offer with using those word in writing/reading will help them a lot. I hope to see you all on Friday at our CommunityDinner. We will prepare a meal together and then enjoy eating it! It sounds likefun. If you know you will be coming, let me know, so I can inform thecoordinator, Julia Hamlin!

Last Friday we celebrated Valentine’sDay in a most special way. A lengthy part of our afternoon was spent readingand sharing Valentines. For many first graders this is the first time they canread all the clever rhymes by themselves. The children shared their happinessthanking each other. We ended our day with milk and a cookie, which seemedjust right. Thank you to the parents who helped with party items. Please stopin to view our friendship pictures taken Valentine’s afternoon. Aiden’s dad, Art Burden, is an atmospheric scientist who has worked with theScripp’s Institute of Oceanography for over eleven years. He created anincredible powerpoint presentation for our weather unit. Last Friday’s Valentine’s Day party was lots of fun. Children ate their cookiesin suspense trying to figure out who their Pixie Pals were. Thanks to all thefamilies who donated cookies and drinks for our party. This week in readingchildren will finish their Venn Diagrams comparing two fairy tales written bydifferent authors. We will also work on getting ready for next week’s statereading test. We will begin by having a class discussion about what the childrenalready know about testing and then answer any questions they have. Then, wewill spend some time looking at a few sample questions to prepare children for the format of the state test. We do not put pressure on children about testingbut encourage them to do their best. As parents, you can help by making sureyour child has had a good night of sleep and a healthy breakfast. Our class willcomplete the reading test next Monday and Tuesday, February 23rd and 34th.We are looking forward to Friday’s fieldtrip to the Pittock Mansion. Please makesure that your child arrives to school on time, as we will be leaving promptly at9 a.m.

Classroom Notes from Ms. Ross Third Grade ‐ Room 17
Oregon State Reading Assessments have been delayed to next Monday,February 23rd. Please make sure that all of our students get enough sleep thenight before. The test is especially challenging to students who are sleepdeprived. There is no ABC HOMEWORK this week. Instead, the students have to select afavorite book that they will use for a “Book Talk.” This book talk will be used for their official speech work sample. All third graders are required to participate ina scored speech work sample. The criteria for the speech work sample is thesame as a writing work sample, except that there is a score for delivering thespeech, and there is no score for conventions‐ spelling and punctuation. Thebook is due at school this Monday, February 23rd. The book should be ageappropriate, interesting to a third grade audience. I am sending home a letter with more details about the criteria. Your help is very valuable to get thisproject off to a good start.
