MARSHALL An Allen Park couple and their adult son died in a single-car crash in Calhoun County shortly after 3 p.m. Monday. The couple William Gatesy Jr., 55, and Dawn Gatesy, 53 were in a 2013 Ford Explorer with their son, William Gatesy III, 28, and two other passengers. The two passengers who survived, Eva Petterle, 81, also of Allen Park, and Shaun Crawford, 27, of Detroit, were taken to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Calhoun County police said the Explorer was in the DOWNRIVERS#1 CHEVY DEALER passing lane on eastbound I-94 near 13 Mile Road when the vehicle went out of control, crossed the right lane of traffic and careened down an embankment before striking a tree violently. I really cant speculate as to what the cause was, Marshall Township Fire Chief Steve Riggs said yesterday. The car went off the road and hit that tree really hard. Its especially tragic when there are mulon Allen Rd. at West Rd. tiple fatalities. Woodhaven Capt. Steve Eddy of the 1-734-676-9600 Calhoun County Sheriff s www.rodgerschevrolet.com Department said a medical Chevy Runs issue could have been in Deep play, but authorities wont know for about a month. Reconstructing the accident scene will also take quite some time, he said. This is the third fatal down the list, he said. We downloaded the information from the computer, but we wont get to it soon. The SUV reportedly hit the tree so hard that the engine separated from the rest of the vehicle, which came to rest on a country road that runs next to the highway. Funeral arrangements for the family are still being discussed and will be handled by Martenson Funeral Home. Gatesy Jr. had retired from the city of Allen Park, where he had worked in the water department from 1977 until 2005. He also was a well-known Michigan Amatuer Hockey Association and high school hockey official. Dawn Gatesy had worked as a paraprofessional for Wyandotte Public Schools for the past 16 years.
