Overview
The ANSI/TIA/EIA 606-A Standard specifies administration fora generic telecommunications cabling system that will supporta multi-product, multi-vendor environment. It provides a uniformadministration approach that is independent of applications, whichmay change several times throughout the life of the telecommunica-tions infrastructure. It establishes guidelines for owners, end users, manufacturers, consultants, contractors, designers, installers, andfacilities administrators involved in the administration of thetelecommunications infrastructure.Use of this Standard is intended to increase the value of the systemowner’s investment in the infrastructure by reducing the laborexpense of maintaining the system, extending the useful economiclife of the system, and providing effective service to users.
Classes of Administration
There are four classes of administration that allcabling systems fall within.
Class 1
is for systems within a single building having only oneTelecommunications Room (TR) that all workstation cabling runsto. The TR, Horizontal Links (HL’s) and Telecommunications MainGrounding Busbar (TMGB) are required to be labeled and adminis-tered.If the system owner wishes to document pathways or firestop-ping locations, Class 2 administration should be used.
Class 2
is for systems within a single building that are served bymultiple TR’s.Class 2 includes administration for backbone cabling,multi-element grounding & bonding, firestopping as well as all theitems within Class 1.
Class 3
is for systems spanning multiple buildings, known as acampus environment.Class 3 includes administration for buildingsand inter-building cabling as well as all elements of Class 2.Administration of Pathways, Spaces and Outside Plant elementsis recommended.
Class 4
is for systems spanning multiple campuses, known as amulti-site system.Class 4 included administration for each site aswell as all elements of Class 3.Administration of Pathways, Spacesand Wide area network connections is recommended.
Identifiers
A unique identifier is associated with each element of the infrastruc-ture to be identified and serves as the key to finding the recordedinformation within the administration system selected.

Required Identifiers& Records
The following is a list of the required records for each of the fourclasses of administration. An administration system shall provide amethod to find the record associated with any specific identifier. The administration system may be managed using a paper-basedsystem, general-purpose spreadsheet software, or special-purposecable management software.
Class 1
systems require the identifiersand records for the following:
• TS identifier• Horizontal Links• Telecommunications Main Grounding Busbar (TMGB)• Telecommunications Grounding Busbar (TGB)
Class 2
systems require the identifiersand records for the following:
• All class 1 elements• Intrabuilding Backbone Cable• Intrabuilding Backbone pair or strand• Firestopping
Class 3
systems require the identifiersand records for the following:
• All class 2 elements• Interbuilding Backbone Cable• Interbuilding Backbone pair or strand• Building
Class 4
systems require the identifiersand records for the following:
• All class 3 elements• Site or Campus
Spatial Information
Telecommunications Space
A telecommunications space is an area used for housing the instal-lation and termination of telecommunications equipment and cable,e.g., common equipment rooms, equipment rooms, commontelecommunications rooms, telecommunications rooms, workareas, and maintenance holes/handholes.
The TS identifier, unique within the building, shall be assignedto the Telecommunications Space, and it shall have the format
fs
,where:
= numeric character(s) identifying the floor of the building occupiedby the TS
= alpha character(s) uniquely identifying the TS on floor f,or the building area in which the space is located
The TS records shall contain the following information:
• TS identifier (primary indexing identifier, e.g., 2A)• type of TS (e.g., TR, CTR, ER, CER, or EF)• building room number• key or access card identification• contact person• hours of access
Building
A building is an entity that can house both Telecommunicationsspace (s) and work areas.A unique building identifier shall beassigned to each building and it shall have the format b, where:
= one or more alpha-numeric characters identifying asingle buildingThere are no labeling requirements for the building identifier.
The building records shall contain the followinginformation:
building name (the primary indexing identifier, e.g.,ADM or ADM1)building location (e.g., street address)a list of all TS’s and their locations in the building, within the infrastructure limits of the tenantcontact information for accessaccess hours
Campus
A campus is a collection of buildings and grounds having legalcontiguous interconnection.A unique campus or site identifiershall be assigned to each campus or site, and it shall have theformat c, where:
= one or more alpha-numeric characters identifying acampus or siteThere are no labeling requirements for the campus or site identifier.
The campus or site records shall containthe following information:
campus or site namecampus or site location (e.g., street address)contact information for local administratorof infrastructurelist of all buildings at the site or campuslocation of main cross-connect, if applicableaccess hours
Cabling Information
Horizontal Link
A horizontal link is defined as the cabling between and including thetelecommunications outlet/connector and the horizontal cross-con-nect termination hardware. It was often referred to as the worksta-tion cabling, horizontal cabling or user drop.
The Horizontal Link Identifier shall be formatted as fs-an,where:
fs
= TS Identifier
= one or two alpha characters uniquely identifying a single patchpanel, a group of patch panels with sequentially numbered ports, anIDC termination block, or a group of IDC termination blocks, servingas part of the horizontal cross-connect
= two to four numeric characters designating the port on a patchpanel, or the section of an IDC termination block on which a four-pair horizontal cable is terminated in the TSIdentifiers shall be placed in the TR, on the patch panel or wiringblock. Each end of the cable shall be labeled within 12 inches fromthe ends, and in the work area each individual connector shall belabeled as well.
The Horizontal Link (HL) record shall contain thefollowing information:
horizontal link identifier (primary indexing identifier, e.g.:A47)cable type (e.g.:4 pr, UTP, category 5e, plenum)
