GENERAL KNOWLEDGE

World Geography

World Geography
Geography is the study of the Earth and its lands, features, inhabitants, and phenomena. A literal translation would be "to describe or write about the Earth"

Earth: Rotation and Revolution

Although often confused, there is a distinct and important difference in the concepts of revolution and rotation. Earth rotates on its axis as it revolves around the Sun. Rotation dictates the length of the diurnal cycle (i.e, the day/night cycle), creates "time zones" with differing local noons, and also causes the apparent movement of the Moon

Earth takes approximately 365.25 days to complete one revolution around the Sun.

Rotation and Revolution

Equator
The Equator refers to the Earth's equator and is an imaginary line on the Earth's surface equidistant from the North Pole and South Pole, dividing the Earth into the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere.

Latitudinal lines & Longitudinal lines

Continents
A continent is one of several very large landmasses on Earth. They are generally identified by convention rather than any strict criteria, with seven regions commonly regarded as continentsthey are (from largest in size to smallest): Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, and Australia.

Oceans & Seas

An ocean (from Ancient Greek Okeanos); the World Ocean of classical antiquity) is a body of saline water that composes a large part of a planet'shydrosphere. In the context of Earth, it refers to one or all of the major divisions of the planet's World Ocean

They are, in descending order of area, the Pacific,Atlantic, Indian, Southern (Antarctic), and Arctic Oceans. The word "sea" is often used interchangeably with "ocean", but a sea is a body of saline water (possibly a division of the World Ocean) in a more inland location.

Bay
A bay is a large body of water connected to an ocean or sea formed by an inlet of land due to the surrounding land blocking some waves and often reducing winds.

A large bay may be called a gulf.

An island or isle is any piece of subcontinental land that is surrounded by water.

An archipelago , sometimes called an island group, is a chain or cluster of islands.

A peninsula is a piece of land that is bordered by water on three sides but connected to mainland.
