Talent alone does not always equal success for
a sports program. One need look no further

than the 2008 Dallas Cowboys for proof of that statement. The ‘Boys had talent in abundance and some had them pegged for a Super Bowl this season, but they didn’t even make the playoffs. Fans and detractors alike can point to many reasons as to why they weren’t able to unite for a memorable year.

On the local level, one team that doesn’t have to worry about team unity is the West Morris Central High School boy’s basketball squad. Wayne Shapiro has his players believing in the system and the results have been positive.

Leadership on the court is important for any team and WMC is no different, in fact they have several players with that attribute.

“Our offensive leaders are Brett Bononno and Jared Washkau,’’ Shapiro said. “Because they score a lot of points, I believe that their teammates look to them for inspiration. Matt Wehrhahn is our ‘rah-rah’ leader and he has taken on the role of making sure his teammates are motivated and focused.

An added advantage for West Morris this winter is the improvement shown by athletes from the start of practice to this point in the season.
