TheCommittee was established to provideadvice to the Secretary on Federal, Stateand local programs designed to createsafe and drug-free schools, and onissues related to crisis planning. Theagenda for the September 5th meetingwill include follow-up discussion onthe August 21

TheAugust hearing focused on issuesrelated to the Safe and Drug-FreeSchools and Communities Act StateGrants program, as well the collectionand use of data to effectively manageyouth drug and violence preventionprograms.There will not be an opportunity forpublic comment during this meeting,however the public may listen to theconference call by calling 800

TheAdvisory Committee on StudentFinancial Assistance is establishedunder Section 491 of the HigherEducation Act of 1965 as amended byPublic Law 100
50 (20 U.S.C. 1098).The Advisory Committee serves as anindependent source of advice andcounsel to the Congress and theSecretary of Education on studentfinancial aid policy. Since its inception,the congressional mandate requires theAdvisory Committee to conductobjective, nonpartisan, and independentanalyses on important aspects of thestudent assistance programs under TitleIV of the Higher Education Act. Inaddition, Congress expanded theAdvisory Committee
s mission in theHigher Education Amendments of 1998to include several important areas:access, Title IV modernization, distanceeducation, and early information andneeds assessment. Specifically, theAdvisory Committee is to review,
