Articolul este partea de vorbire care individualizeaz\u0103 obiecte \u015fi fenomene \u00eendeplinind func\u0143ia de determinant. Este considerat \u201edeterminantul propriu-zis", pentru c\u0103 el nu poale fi o parte de vorbire independent\u0103, el contribuie doar la determinarea unic\u0103 sau individual\u0103 a substantivului pe care \u00eel \u00eenso\u0143e\u015fte.
Aproape fiecare substantiv dintr-o propozi\u0143ie englez\u0103 este \u00eenso\u0143it de un articol, iar felul articolului folosit este departe de a coincide \u00eentotdeauna cu acela din limba rom\u00e2n\u0103.
Articolul este redat prin:
a) articolul hot\u0103r\u00e2tth e;
b) articolul nehot\u0103r\u00e2ta saua n;
e) articolul zero sau neexprimat.
Articolul are pozi\u0143ie fix\u0103: \u00eenaintea substantivuJui.
Articolul hot\u0103r\u00e2t(t he)
-se pronun\u0143\u0103 [\u2206\u2194] \u00eenaintea consoanelor: the look, the pupil, the window...
- se pronun\u0143\u0103 [\u2206\u03b9] \u00eenaintea vocalelor sau semivocalelor:
the eye, the artist, the honour...
- pronun\u0143area [\u2206\u03b9]este, de asemenea, folosit\u0103 pentru subliniere :
\u201eThe\u201d is an article. \u201eThe" este articol.
Articolul hot\u0103r\u00e2t se utilizeaz\u0103 cu substantive num\u0103rabile (au form\u0103 at\u00e2t la
singular, c\u00e2t \u015fi la plural) pentru a indica un anumit obiect, clar individualizat:
The box is on the floor. Cutia se afl\u0103 pe jos.
The bates art on the floor. Cutiile se afl\u0103 pe jos.
The student is learning English. Studentul \u00eenva\u0143\u0103 engleze\u015fte.
The boys were running fast. B\u0103e\u0143ii alergau repede.
