PORTFOLIO IN TEACHING PRIMARY CLASSES
by Ewa Auguścik - Joppek
Teaching English to primary classes is usually based on vocabulary andsimple grammar structures.Curriculum includes veryfew cultural items. Due to this fact, I cameto a conclusion that my students knowhardly anything about English – speakingcountries and they lack fluency in writinglonger passages expressing their thoughtsand opinions. Moreover, there isinsufficient amount of time to introduceany significant innovations. However, realisation of cross – curricular themesfocused my attention on one particular teaching method called
portfolio
.The method of portfolio is based oncollecting materials and dataon a specific topic bystudents. The major aim of using this method is developing such skillsas:
•
planning and organising one’slearning process,
•
self – evaluation,
•
increasing responsibility for one’seducation,
•
making individual decisions,
•
creative problem solving,
•
gaining, managing and usinginformation from differentresources,
•
developing intellectual skills,
•
broadening individual interests,I applied this method in the three basicstages:
Introductory stage
•
getting students familiar with thenotion of portfolio,
•
specifying the kind of materials to be gathered, e.g. photos, illustrations, press news, articles,
•
establishing the time of handing instudents works,
•
formulating criteria of marking ( incooperation with the students),
