Dearest EXPLORE reader,
Welcome to 2009.I remember when I celebrated NewYear’s Eve in 1990, and was amazed by it. Itfelt so futuristic to be closing in on the mil

lennium. Then when we went through Y2K,2009 sounded like it was a million years intothe future. And yet, here I sit in 2009, and2000 seems like it was yesterday. Time ies. This past weekend, I was laid up on the couch channel surng, and caughtthe opening sequence to Ferrell Bueller’s Day Off. The movie was lmed in1986. I remember watching it and, like everyone else, guring that Ferris wasthe coolest high school kid in history (I was in middle school at the time). As Iwatched the movie the other day, it struck me that this movie is now 22 yearsold. Matthew Broderick was 24 when he lmed it, and that makes him 46.WOW. It makes a person think. Where were you 22 years ago, and did youthink you had all the time in the world to accomplish everything you wanted
to accomplish?
As we enter a new year, it’s one of the most popular times to take yourpersonal inventory and evaluate. At the same time, I have always liked thequote, “You can’t change the past, but you can ruin the present by worryingabout the future.” Today it’s 2009, and in the blink of an eye, it will be 2031.Doesn’t that seem almost impossible? I’m 33 today, and in 2031 I’ll be 55 andclosing in on retirement. UGH. Enjoy 2009. Make it the greatest year of yourlife, and spend as little energy as possible fretting over 2008, and don’t worryabout 2010. Trust me, it’ll be here pretty quick.I hope you enjoy this latest issue of EXPLORE. We have one of my favoritepieces in “Giddens’ Predictions”. Local resident and businessman Michael Gid

dens has a knack for getting creative with some of his off the wall predictions. The last time we did this, in 2005, he predicted that Disney would buy a parcelof land on the north end of town and put in a resort. I kid you not…a few dayslater I was elding calls from Houston realtors looking to see some propertyaround Boerne because of the “new Disney project”. So please, when youread his humorous and creative predictions, take them with a grain of salt.We also have the return of the wildly popular “Marjorie”, who has put to

gether a few very interesting pieces about Boerne’s history. This one focuseson “The Flats”, which old-timers will know is the area west of the Cibolo, andsouth of San Antonio St. I forwarded the article to many friends and family, andmany agree that they learned much. I hope you do as well.So here I sit on a cold and dreary morning in the futuristic year of 2009writing this letter. I can see my reection in my computer screen, and while Ihave a few scrapes and wrinkles that life has bestowed upon me, I’m still thatkid from 1986 in my heart. Take the present, and make the most of it. Leave2008 in the past, and tackle 2010 when it shows up. And hey, may the dreamsof your past become the realities of your future.
Smiling,Benjamin D. Schooley
PS – Happy New Year.
