2006 - 07 ACADEMIC YEAR
According to the 2006-2007 School of Nursing Faculty and Student Handbooks, before the Qualifying exam,
doctoral students are expected to take two quarters of research residency for a total of 6 units (including one
which focuses on data analysis using an existing data set). The course is:

(1-6 units) § Fa, Wi, Sp, SS1, SS2, SS3. Prerequisites: Completion of first year of doctoral study and consent of
adviser. Laboratory 3 - 18 hours. Staff
The student will participate in ongoing faculty research. This experience will contribute to the student’s
methodological or substantive expertise.
Below is a list of available research residencies to assist doctoral students and their advisors to identify potentially relevant research
experiences. The list is not all inclusive as faculty members who already have their residency slots filled may not be listed. Below are
examples of types of research activities within the broad categories A to K.

populations), discussion of health disparities, writing a consent form, revising an IRB application, monitoring adverse events, learning about Data
Safety Monitoring Plans and Boards, learning about NIH Clinical Trial categories.
D. Preparing for the Conduct of Research: e.g. selection and/or development of instruments/questionnaires, obtaining informed consent,
developing community or site relationships, orienting data collection sites to the project, pilot testing of data collection methods, learning the
regulations of human, animal or laboratory research.
E. Data Coding and Preparation – Quantitative Data Management: e.g. coding, data entry, preparing a utilizing a spreadsheet for managing
data, preparing an SPSS database, learning about HIPAA and other Federal regulations regarding the proper handling, storage, and securing of
data.
F. Data Coding and Preparation – Qualitative Data Management: e.g. coding of transcripts, utilizing computer-based programs for management
of qualitative data, learning about HIPAA and other Federal regulations regarding the proper handling, storage, and securing of data.
G. Conducting Human Research: e.g. learning about appropriate ways to approach and accrue subjects, learning strategies for accruing subjects
from minority populations, consenting subjects, interviewing subjects, collecting physiological data, monitoring the integrity of the project, learning to
keep tabs on the various aspects of a project, keeping research notes, keeping instrument or coding changes up-to-date, handling psychosocial
testing of subjects, providing feedback to research team members, learning how to respond in emergency situations, learning to report adverse
events, learning to remain objective and not intervene.
