All About the Standard Poodle: DescriptionThese dogs may look like lightweights in the showring, but they were originally bred to work hard inthe water. The Standard Poodle spent hoursretrieving water fowl for hunters and the breed'sdense coat helped protect it from the cold, dampworking conditions. Because the breed is notcommonly used as a working dog today, TheAmerican Kennel Club classifies the StandardPoodle as part of the Non-Sporting Group. Thesedogs weigh 45 to 70 pounds and stand over 15inches tall.
