Abstract
The main concern of this tutorial is the evolution of the "Intelligent Network (IN)" which is in principledesigned as an evolvable telecommunications middleware solution. After a brief review of the IN principles,this tutorial looks at the main impacts on IN evolution derived from new bearer network environments / application domains (e.g., Voice over IP networks) and emerging middleware technologies (i.e., distributedobject technologies and mobile agent technologies).

Dr. Thomas Magedanz received his M.S. and his Ph.D. in computer sciences from the Technical Universityof Berlin, Germany in 1988 and 1993, respectively.In 1989 he was named as an assistant professor at the Department for Open Communication Systems (OKS)of the Technical University Berlin with focus on distributed computing and telecommunications. Besides thepresentation of various courses he has been involved in several international research studies and projectsrelated to Intelligent Networks, Telecommunications Management, Personal/mobile Communications, TINAand Intelligent/Mobile Agents within Deutsche Telekom AG, EURESCOM and RACE/ACTS.From 1996-1998 he chaired the "Intelligent Communication Environments" research department at theGMD Research Center for Open Communication Systems (FOKUS), where he was responsible for severalprojects related to IN, TINA, UMTS and Intelligent/Mobile Agents. In addition was one of the foundingdirector sof the FOKUS Competence Center for Intelligent Mobile Agents (IMA).In 1998 he joined IKV++ GmbH, a spin off company of GMD FOKUS, as senior consultant, where he isleading multiple international projects related to fixed and mobile telecommunications middleware.Dr. Magedanz is a member of the ACM, GI and IEEE and the author of numerous technical papers/articles.In 1996 he published a book on Intelligent Networks. Since two years he giving professional seminarsrelated to IN, TINA and Intelligent Mobile Agents.

Dr. Thomas Magedanz

Besides the presentation of variouscourses he has been involved in several international research studies andprojects related to Intelligent Networks, Telecommunications Management,Personal/mobile Communications, TINA and Intelligent/Mobile Agents withinDeutsche Telekom AG, and EURESCOM and RACE / ACTS researchprogrammes.From 1996 - 1998 he chaired the "Intelligent Communication Environments"research department at the GMD Research Center for Open CommunicationSystems (FOKUS), where he was responsible for several projects related toIN, TINA, UMTS and Intelligent/Mobile Agents.Since 1998 he is working as a senior consultant for the IKV++ GmbH, a spin-off company of GMD FOKUS, which provides consultancy services anddevelopes advanced telecommunication middleware and service products.Dr. Magedanz is a member of the ACM, GI and IEEE and the author of morethan 100 technical papers/articles. In 1996 he published a book on IntelligentNetworks.
