Description

The genre of medical drama became popular as early as in the 50’s when Medic hit the TV screens. The audience again showed their liking towards a hospital-based atmosphere when Dr Kildare became popular in early 60’s. The TV series Kildare brought an instant hit for NBC. A generation before this would however relate popular medical drama to shows like ER and Chicago Hope. ER made George Clooney the heartthrob of TV.

Both shows have left an indelible mark only to be cashed in by others in the genre. One of the most recent hits is Grey’s Anatomy. It’s a multiple award-winning series that gave the careers of the entire cast a big push. Katherine Heigl who plays Dr Izzie Stevens has become one of the highest paid television actresses. The USP of the show was the in-depth portrayal of interpersonal relationships between medicos. The series has been running successfully since 2005, with its fifth season currently being aired.

The latest to join the bandwagon is House, M.D, which made its debut in Nov 2004. The protagonist Dr. Gregory House is quite different from the stereotypical image of a doctor. He’s cranky and boorish, yet brilliant enough to make people turn to him when they are in dire straits. The ratings of the show imply that people have accepted the doctor despite his flaws. The series has received many prestigious awards and nominations, and is now into its fifth season.

The popularity of these shows has also created a lot of searches on the web. People look for TV episodes online to catch up on missed episodes. All medical dramas like Grey’s Anatomy, House, M.D and Scrubs are now easily available online.
