Im Erika. Im jessie.

(ERIKA) Kansas City is an eclectic city, and KCAI is no exception to this.

(e)The history of the school lies in the buildings, The material literally carries the weight of its history.

(jessie) students and faculty keep the school alive. They have been contributing to the material history. each scuff on the ground, each graffiti drawing, and even each scarf knitted for thomas hart benton, contributes to another layer of history to our eclectic campus.

(JESSIE) There are unexpected moments all through out campus, such as this sculptural element on top of the gate. Coming from a university, I know rsthand how surprising and refreshing it was to see such an eccentric looking campus, one that doesnt take itself too seriously

elevate clarify personalize

(erika) We asked ourselves, How can we elevate, clarify, and personalize the current waynding?

(erika) Our concept is heavily inuenced by KCAIs informal voice and personality. We are focusing on embracing the unexpected moments that people encounter around the campus. We embrace the lighthearted humor and celebrate all things out-of-theordinary.

(jessie) We embrace the fact thatwe are not a normal school. We aren't overly formal. We aren't stuffy or uptight. We aren't dry or shallow. We are brimming with creativity. Were unconventional, but right now, as seen by this door for game design, we need some new waynding.

Our design focuses on the balance between the informal, warm environment and the historical signicance that KCAI prides itself upon.

(jessie) (click)We maintain respect to the schools identity with the typography (click)while reecting KCAI's eclectic and progressive personality by juxtaposing materials such as metal with the environment and using an updated color palette that will be painted acrylic. This conveys the school's unique creative energy and preserves its reputation as a proud historic entity.

(erika) By embracing the materials and what they represent, we created a curved arrow shape that encompasses the idea of progress and also acts as a waynding element in itself. This exible element is a metaphor for the students here; exible but focused. Meaningful, passionate, and fun. We played with this arrow shape throughout the waynding.

(erika) These banners demarcate the perimeter of the school. their bright colors are instantly noticeable.

(erika) Our site identiers use the arrow shape as a way to hug street corners, such as 44th and Warwick or 45th and Oak.

(erika) These extra site identifying elements act as benches as well.

Parking signs are included to clearly mark parking areas, since they dont currently exist.

Crosswalks implement the arrow graphic to convey that sense of movement

The campus directory is made of a shape based on the arrow graphic. It would be ideally placed in front of vanderslice, since rst time visitors often come this way.

The directionals use an extruded arrow shape to point the visitor in the right direction and to display information clearly. The height of the directionals make them easily visible from afar.

Street signs are also made of the same arrow shape, while keeping their functionality as legible and directional signage. There is also colored acrylic to help them stand out.

Accessible entrances are marked by these directionals.

Building identiers are constructed with transparent acrylic. The arrow graphics act as a decorative element as well as a typographic anchor.

wall mounts would be strategically placed at corners to inform visitors of important locations within the buliding. these signs would be easily noticable and allow the visitor to quickly nd the direction they need ot go. The shape again, alludes to the arrow shape.

The overhead directionals inside the buildings are rounded rectangles, which allude to the negative space created when the arrows form corners. They indicate locations on specic oor levels.

The rest rooms are probably the most important place in any building. Graphics would be silk screened onto the doors while the labels are painted on transparent acrylic.

In each room identier, the shape of the arrow is arranged at the corners to allude to the frame, to composition. The typography would be silk screened onto the wall.

Our waynding attempts to elevate, clarify, and personalize the current waynding. and with that.

well end with this note, that you can nd on our door. Thank you
