The Maltese (also known as Maltese Terrier) has acompact and petite body with a long silky coat and standsbetween 7-8in at the shoulder and weighs about 4-6lb.This breed is described as the oldest of the European toybreeds. There is a controversy as to whether the Malteseoriginated in Malta, although he has certainly existed therefor centuries. He was kept as a companion by the ancientGreeks, Romans, and also the Phoenicians who settled theisland of Malta in 1500 B.C. He has eventually found hisway to China and the Philippines, probably due toenterprising Maltese traders.
