Children’s Dancing Recovery
‘Getting the edge’ and keeping it
I am an ultra-marathon recovery specialist who works with ultra distance runners and walkers(seewww.worldrun.org

) but I work in other areas as well-I deal with muscle soreness, stiffness, tightness, and ongoing recovery problems of the legsMany children are into dancing-tap, ballet, Irish, hip hop, jazz-or whatever they are doing-whilethey are small they learn the basics and disciplines associated with their choice but as they get olderthe competition becomes more intense, and as this increases so does the costs both in time andfinancial investment for the parentsThe further up the ladder of success their child climbs, the more stress for all involved and thegreater the investment becomes, and as the child grows into puberty, there is greater stress on thelegs and muscles as the legs lengthen to keeps up with the body sizeFor the serious dancer, it is practise-practise-and more practise and rehearsal and performance; thismeans being on the legs on consecutive days or nights, try to recover and into it againWarm ups stretches and warm downs are done but the legs do not have a chance to recover properlybefore it was back to practise againMany parents would have had, or would have considered using massage or a massage therapist tohelp their child recover from the sore legs they develop during their intense training, practice, rehearsals and shows but time and cost factors may make it uneconomical and impracticalDuring show seasons of matinees and evening performances it is basically get up, off to the theatre, show, break, show and home again, bed and up again, then when the show is over it is back topractice againThe can round of engagements can be quite gruelling both mentally and physically for the youngdancer and their legs-it means muscle soreness, stiffness, and the old favourite-blistersDancers are like ultra athletes, they need to recover as quickly as possible without putting themuscles which are already under stress, at risk of an injury which may stop them performingRecovery is important-and the quicker it is started the faster the recovery-the most effective time toget onto this is while they are in the 'window of opportunity'-while both they and the muscles theyare still warm and flexibleAssisting the muscles to get rid of by-products and wastes that have formed is a priority and it doesnot need to be done on a massage table by a professional-anyone can do it

This includes parents of the dancer
They have a already made a large commitment to their dancing child’s career and they can helpprotect this investment by protecting those legs from soreness and stiffness during their dancingyears-and it does not need a great deal of effort to do thisThis is a result sheet when the World Run Recovery System was developed and shows the gradualchanges from working
on
the muscles to working
with
them-if this was translated to the dancerwith fatigued muscles they would recovered in a short time

Getting ‘the edge’ over soreness and stiffness
Parents can help their young dancer to achieve the equivalent recovery as easily as I did by workingwith the muscles-after a heavy schedule of training, practice, rehearsals and performanceThe muscles being enlisted to assist in their own recoveryIn the normal course of events there is very little injury other than small micro-tears in the over usedmuscle tissues-unless there has been a problem from an exterior sources such as impact or bio-mechanical causes (the dancing shoes, blisters) to increase muscle stress, trained muscles are notinjured in the conventional senseUsing conventional methods of recovery is not appropriate at this time and it may be ineffective asthese are being repaired by the body itself, any intrusive outside interference will slow this process.*Some research has shown that conventional systems do not help with recovery if it is done within2 hours of the end of the event-but all agree the athlete is still benefiting from the psychologicaleffect more than the physical as it gives after competition winds down. There is nothing wrong with the legs, the muscles are just fatigued so they is basically nothing to fixon there is no point getting in using complicated recovery systems that

Will cost a great deal of money

Will take a lot end of study

Will need equipment

Will need SOMEONE to use it
World Run Recovery System-an alternative simpleoil free, effective option
The World Run Recovery System was developed for ultra people who only needed something lightand easy to do track or roadside in the extreme conditions they compete in but the advantage to thedancer is that they can spend more time practising and keep their ‘edge’

It can be done in 3 (or more) versions

Sitting-can be done by self just using a strap

Sitting assisted-if the dancer is in costume then can be done without rearranging it

Prone-for that extra boost for that time in between shows and when they reach home late atnight, it will only take a few minutes to calm the legs down before bed-then again on gettingup in the morning just to get the legs moving again
