Children’s Basketball Recovery
‘Getting the edge’ and keeping it
I am an ultra-marathon recovery specialist who works with ultra distance runners and walkers(seewww.worldrun.org

) but I work in other areas as well-I deal with muscle soreness, stiffness, tightness, and ongoing recovery problems of the legsNetball is a fast moving competitive game that needs fitness and skill to play and while being afemale sport you can forget the ladylike behaviour-there is as much killer instinct going on the courtas there is in any male dominated sportOther than this and using a round ball, there is another area they have in common, that is inrecovery after the game-and because of the numbers of players in netball there is a lot of recoveringto do-in fact there are twice as many legs to recover as players using them

It would be impossible to estimate the number of children and young people playing in clubsassociations and informal games organized by schools, colleges and other interested peopleThe further up the ladder of success their child climbs, the more stress for all involved and thegreater the investment becomes, and as the child grows into puberty, there is greater stress on thelegs and muscles as the legs lengthen to keeps up with the body sizeFor the serious player, it is practise-practise-and more practise with games in between; withrelatively short periods to try to recover during competitionThose who have good coaches make sure warm ups, stretches and warm downs are done before andafter training and playing; the major leagues and teams may have full medical staff on call to helpwith recovery problems, but the minor leagues and knock about teams do not
Recovery
No matter where the netballer lives or what league they are playing in recovery is a problembecause if a player can recover quickly and efficiently, their value to the team and quality of playincreasesThe younger player of today is tomorrows star player but to reach these heights they need all thehelp they can get, this not only means with netball skills and within the team-but from parents aswellThey may not be much help in the skills area or know much about the game but an area where theycan be of valuable help to their player is that of recovery

Children’s Netball Post Event Recovery using the World Run Recovery System2Copyright 2008 Michael Gillan ultra marathon recovery specialisthttp://aching-legs-relief.com/netballer.htmlYoung netballer’s are like ultra athletes, they need to recover as quickly as possible without puttingthe muscles which are already under stress, at risk of an injury which may stop them playing theirnext game what can impact on their play is muscle soreness, stiffness and blistersRecovery is important-and the quicker it is started the faster the recovery-the most effective time toget onto this is while they are in the 'window of opportunity'-while both they and the muscles theyare still warm and flexibleAssisting the muscles to get rid of by-products and wastes that have formed is a priority and it doesnot need to be done on a massage table by a professional-anyone can do it
This includes parents
They have a already made a large commitment to their child’s career and they can help protect thisinvestment by protecting those legs from soreness and stiffness during their dancing years-and itdoes not need a great deal of effort to do this
Getting ‘the edge’ over soreness and stiffness
Parents can help their young player to achieve the equivalent recovery as easily as I did by workingwith the muscles-after a heavy schedule of training, practice, and gamesThe muscles being enlisted to assist in their own recoveryIn the normal course of events there is very little injury other than small micro-tears in the over usedmuscle tissues-unless there has been a problem from an exterior sources such as impact or bio-mechanical causes (the court surface, shoes, blisters) to increase muscle stressTrained muscles are not injured in the conventional sense-using conventional methods of recoveryis not appropriate at this time and it may be ineffective as these are being repaired by the bodyitself, any intrusive outside interference will slow this process.*Some research has shown that conventional systems do not help with recovery if it is done within2 hours of the end of the event-but all agree the athlete is still benefiting from the psychologicaleffect more than the physical as it gives after competition winds down. There is nothing wrong with the legs, the muscles are just fatigued so they is basically nothing to fixon there is no point getting in using complicated recovery systems that

Will cost a great deal of money

Will take a lot end of study

Will need equipment

Will need SOMEONE to use it

Children’s Netball Post Event Recovery using the World Run Recovery System3Copyright 2008 Michael Gillan ultra marathon recovery specialisthttp://aching-legs-relief.com/netballer.htmlThis is a result sheet when the World Run Recovery System was developed and shows the gradualchanges from working
on
the muscles to working
with
them-if this was translated to the netballerwith fatigued muscles they would recovered in a short time
And this was achieved using a simple Massage-Lite systemThe World Run recovery System-massage for the masses
