Using conventions from real media Each of your media production tasks had a specific set of conventions whether

r it was the music magazine, the music video or the ancillary tasks. In each case you researched real media to establish conventions and guidelines to aid you in the production of your own work. For this topic you need to consider how your understanding of these real media has developed over the last two years. Task 1 In pairs begin by making a note of the conventions of music magazines, music videos and of the print work you created for the ancillary element of the A2 work. We will feedback to the whole class so you create a substantial list. Ensure you add any conventions you did not think of to your lists. Conventions of music magazines: Front cover, contents, masthead, new albums released, music interviews, questions, cover lines, pictures, pull quotes, page numbers, advertisements, barcode, price.

Conventions of Music Videos: Animation, lip syncing, voice, mise en scene, props, setting, cuts, costume,

Conventions of ancillary products (digipak & magazine advert): Album name, artist name, track list, barcode, price, credits, logo, reviews, website.

Applying theories to your work Postmodern style: Irony, Parody, Pastiche, Bricolage, Intertextuality. Bricolage is the process of deliberately borrowing or adapting signs or features from different styles or genres to create a new mixture of meanings (OSullivan et. al, 1998). Pastiche: Bog standard copying of conventions or can be done for bricolage effect. Whichever, this ultimately

reinforces their importance in culture and society. Parody is a kind on pastiche which makes fun of the subject. Intertextuality is the way in which media texts gain their meanings by referring to other media texts that the producers assume that the reader/decoder will be familiar with and recognise (OSullivan et. al 1998). Task 2 How did you pastiche or parody any other media texts? (This includes bricolage and intertextuality). Use the correct terminology in your answer and be specific as to the features you borrowed or copied. Music magazine For my music magazine postmodern styles were incorporated, I used bricolage for my magazine my taking poses other pop artists have done and styling my artist around them, I also looked at similar styles of artists and took inspiration from their clothing to produce bright and fun styling. You can see where intertexuality is used in my magazine referring to other texts such as pop magazine; I looked at pop for layout ideas and wanted to include elements of their font and positioning of the text.

Music Video For our music video we wanted to approach it in more of an original way so techniques such as intertexuality cant easily be recognised because we didnt really refer to any other texts. We took artist and styling inspiration from bands such as the ting tings, and have taken the energetic dance theme into our video from the atmosphere created in other dance videos.

Ancillary tasks I ancillary texts I used bricolge, I took and existing pattern and edited it to create something new and distinctive for my advert and digipak to use with my photograph of the band. I have referred to similar texts by using a bold pattern to catch the eye something that is popular to be used on the cover of dance albums.

Task 3 Look back at your previous work and find three examples from both pieces where you have used conventions from real media texts: Convention Example of how youve used it within your production work (remember that you can

challenge, follow or vary existing conventions) Music magazine production: Convention 1: Masthead- I have used a bold masthead on the cover of my magazine to grab attention and create a brand. Photographs- I have used images of my artist on the cover and throughout the contents and double page spread, this gives her a believable identity. Pull quotes- I have used a pull quotes of my double page spread page this gives the artist a personality straight away and the reader an idea before theyve read, I used Quirky is my middle name. Lip syncing- we showed several shots of the female artist lip syncing on different backgrounds using different style shots eg. Close up. Props- we included props such as the dj deck for our male member of the band, this creates a more realistic view. Location- we used coloured backgrounds on a screen this is appropriate to the genre and style of music. Website- on both my digipak and advert I included the website name for the band and their twitter feed, this makes it more personal and believable. Magazine review- I also included a magazine review of the album.
