LABORATORY MANUAL Subject: CE 47 Hydraulics Experiment #: 5 Experiment Title: Determination of the Coefficient of Discharge of a Trapezoidal Weir Objectives: To determine the coefficient of discharge of a trapezoidal weir. Apparatus: Stopwatch, meter stick, water tank (with trapezoidal weir) Procedure: 1. The weir plate under test is positioned at the end of the approach channel, in a vertical plane, with the sharp edge on the upstream side. The dimensions of the weir plate are taken. 2. Open the main gate valve. 3. The flow regulating valve is adjusted to give a discharge without flooding the weir. 4. Conditions are allowed to stabilize before the rate of discharge and head (H) are measured. 5. Measure the head from the crest of the weir. Note that the head over the crest of the weir is not the head of the weir. Measure this head from the crest of the weir to water surface at a point which is farther back from the weir. 6. Collect the discharge for a recorded span of time. Calculations: The discharge over the trapezoidal weir is given by the following formula: ( ) ( ) ( ) ( ) ( )( )( )

Where: Q = discharge over the trapezoidal weir C = coefficient of discharge L = horizontal length of the liquid surface over the weir H = head over the weir /2 = angle of opening of the triangular weir Observations: Trial # Head Volume Time Discharge

Angle of notch of the triangular weir: _______________ Precautions: 1. Start the data gathering only when the level of water is almost constant. 2. The head, near the upstream side of the weir, is not the head of the weir. Discussion (for Lab. Report): At the end of three different sharp crested weirs experiment, describe qualitatively the differences in terms of discharge and coefficients.
