FROM THE PRESIDENT
By: Ariel Z. dela Concha

Lets all remember that success, failure, sufferings and troubles are inevitable. They will always be part of our lives. But we are called to stand out and be the best. And if we choose to be the best, it is what would define our actions.

As a little boy once I was, I have always been fascinated about art. You get to own the world. Through lines, colors and forms you can express yourself. You can seem to paint the universe right using your bare hands. But there is more to an artist than just being able to express yourself through designs. As I stand here before you, I know I hold many responsibilities than what I was. I stand here as no ordinary student. I face everyone as a leader. And as a leader I have to inspire you. But I dont have much of a literary brilliance like those who stood before you for me to do that. The best that I can do is to speak from the heart. Because I believe that everything that comes from within is genuine just as how leadership can never be defined by how you look, how you speak, your academic standing. Even your grades can never account for how great a leader you are. You can not even put a measure on it by your charisma or not even on your social status. Everyone can be a leader. Yes you, you and you, everyone. You have your own right to be. Its the ability to emanate change even the world is so fast changing. Its an inner drive to create a seemingly perfectly imperfect world. On a personal note, I myself have already invoked change starting from my very own self. From a little boy with just but small dreams to a well-grown man who aspires for bigger ambitions. With this, I keep myself abreast with reality. And little by little I am beginning to understand. Lets do away with the conventional inklings about architects. Architects just dont design houses, they create homes. Architects just dont draw dreams in the skies, they build success. Its not just about aesthetics. We must therefore create a social awareness with what is happening around us. Lets not just look into what we see. Lets help in promoting healthier studentry and citizenry. To do these we must unite ourselves in one common goal. Lets be the best of who we are and let us not confine ourselves to sleepless nights. Learning is not just within the four corners of the university. By being aware with what is happening outside we can create a better future. We are here in the school to capitalize on our innate talents and skills but tougher acts await us from the real world. To my fellow students, I enjoin you to participate in the Junior Philippines Institute of Architects projects in promoting not just the organization but to improve on ourselves as individuals. Practice your leadership rights. Its no easy task but if we do it little by little, sooner we will succeed on our own. Yes, it requires patience, hard work and commitment but I know we can shape the future. In the long run, we will realize that every challenge we will meet along the way is a thousand opportunity to grow and that there are really things worth striving for. Yes, as we pave the crossroads, there will be some set backs and failures and every time you are to give up, remember that you are one big architect born to withstand the painstaking defeats like the buildings you designed, withering all storms and odds. On behalf of the organization, I would like to thank the Philippine Institute of Architects for gracing this event. It has always been much more than a pleasure seeing you supporting your future colleagues. And I would also like to grab this opportunity to thank you for believing in our potentials. One day we will meet in the illustrious line of professional architects. To Architect Maria Teresa C. Velasco our very own adviser, our mentor, and a friend as well, thank you for your full support and for the concern that you are giving us. For all the encouragements that you are giving us. Specially po pagdating sa academics at sa totoong buhay. Maraming Salamat po. To my fellow students, future architects, lets all remember that success, failure, sufferings and troubles are inevitable. They will always be part of our lives. But we are called to stand out and be the best. And if we choose to be the best, it is what would define our actions. Hope this could make us realize who we are and who we could still be, what we can do and what we can still do. Lets embrace success and persevere through failures. Together hand in hand, these we can achieve. There were no successes ever achieved by just dreaming. Lets work on them and one day we will wake up, buildings towering the sky, exquisite houses dressing the environment, everything in its beauty. Tell yourself. I am a leader. I think I therefore am.

CONSTRUCTION 101

What is the difference between Precast concrete and Cast-in place concrete? Precast concrete is a construction product produced by casting concrete in a reusable mold or form which is then cured in a controlled environment, transported to the construction site and lifted into place. While Cast-in place concrete is transported in an unhardened state, primarily as ready-mix, and placed in forms. Ready mixed concrete is proportioned and mixed off the project site. The concrete is delivered in the site in a truck agitator but can also be delivered in a non-agitating truck. Specialized paving equipment may be used to mix and spread concrete for

LIFESAVING TIPS
By: Gabriel Gringo F. Tuazon Stress is a normal part in the life of an Architecture student and usually it comes from everyday occurrences. Here are some ways you can deal with everyday sources of stress. 1. Eliminate as many sources of stress as you can. For example, if crowds bother you, go to the supermarket when you know the lines wont be too long. Try renting videotapes rather than going to crowded movie theaters. 2. If you are always running late, sit down with a pencil and paper and see how you are actually allotting your time. Say it takes you 40 minutes to get to work. Are you leaving your house on time? You may be able to solve your problem (and de-stress your life a bit) just by being realistic. If you cant find the time for all the activities that are important to you, maybe you are trying to do too much. 3. Avoid predictably stressful situations. If a certain sport or game makes you tense, decline the invitation to play. After all, the point of these activities is to have a good time. If you know you wont, theres no reason to play. 4. If you cant remove the stress, remove yourself. Slip away once in a while for some private time. These quiet moments may give you a fresh perspective on your problems. Avoid stressful people. 5. Competing with others, whether in accomplishments, appearance, or possessions, is an avoidable source of stress. You might know people who do all they can to provoke envy in others. While it may seem easy to say you should be satisfied with what you have, its the truth. Stress from this kind of jealousy is self-inflicted. 6. Laborsaving devices, such as cellular phones or computer hookups, often encourage us to cram too many activities into each day. Before you buy new equipment, be sure that it will really improve your life. Be aware that taking care of equipment and getting it repaired can be stressful. 7. Try doing only one thing at a time. For example, when youre riding your exercise bike, you dont have to listen to the radio or watch television. 8. Remember, sometimes its okay to do nothing. 9. If you suffer from insomnia, headaches, recurring colds, or stomach upsets, consider whether stress is part of the problem. Being chronically angry, frustrated, or apprehensive can deplete your physical resources. 10. If you feel stress (or anything else) is getting the better of you, seek professional help a doctor or therapist. Early signs of excess stress are loss of a sense of well-being and reluctance to get up in the morning to face another day. Source: http://www.rd.com/health/10-ways-to-managestress/

Computers and the Internet were supposed to make life easier; instead, people are busier than ever. Whether you are single or juggling family responsibilities, learn to manage your time to get as much as you can out of each day.

4. Prioritize what you need to accomplish. "Pareto's principle" states that 80 percent of your accomplishments come from 20 percent of your efforts, so think strategically: Locate and isolate this valuable 20 percent, then focus your efforts on the tasks that promise the greatest rewards. 5. Delegate as many chores as you can. Hand out projects to subordinates at work. 6. Learn to say no to nonessential demands on your time. Don't volunteer for a committee if you don't have time, and decline invitations to events you don't have time to attend. 7. Overcome procrastination. 8. Avoid perfectionism. Don't waste time obsessively perfecting a task when you could better spend the time on something else.
Source: eHow.com http://www.ehow.com/

1. Create a schedule or to-do list. Write down deadlines for accomplishing certain tasks. 2. Plan to tackle difficult projects at the times of day when you are most alert. 3. Schedule time for people, including yourself. Create some personal time by waking up half an hour earlier or going to bed half an hour later than usual; plan a weekly date with your family, or arrange to have lunch with friends.

LOVE & RELATIONSHIP CORNER

By: Sharie Shyne S. Soriano

1.

Youre way stronger and more beautiful than you think.

2. Heartbreak is the great prettifier. Bank on the breakup to urge you to look more stunning. Its time to lose those extra five pounds! 3. Once a cheater, always a cheater. ARCHITECT AIDA CRUZ DEL ROSARIO

Architecture used to be a course for men only but thanks to this woman, Mrs. Aida Cruz-Del Rosario, she was one of the first few Filipinas who fought to enter this male dominated world. Her enrollment in a university was rejected, but Maam Aida and her grandfather did not give up. They talked with Thomas Mapua and their proposal of the idea of having the graduated the first female architect won her a slot in that course. War broke and unfortunately MAPUA was stricken really bad she had to transfer to the University of Santo Tomas where she finished the last years of BS Architecture. She took the board exams and passed, unknowing that she was the first registered Filipina Architect. She got married to a Civil Engineer, Mr. Jose F. Del Rosario and resided in Baguio where they did a lot of projects and development. source: www.google.com 1. Tomas MAPUA 2. CARLOS BARETTO 3. ANTONIO TOLEDO 4. CHERI MANDELBAUM 5. ARTHUR CHAMBERT 6.
