Orphans Oacie and Raynell Taylor are sisters. They are also survivors. And they are alone in a world that defines their value by the number of cigarettes that can be bought with the monthly stipend paid out by a corrupt social system. Used as currency for the downtrodden, and trapped in a part of the world where poverty’s striking silhouette outlines every doorway, home is only a memory, etched by loss and unsalted tears.

You and I would easily be tarnished by the greed and filth that surrounds them, but surrender is not an option to them; at least not until they are defeated by circumstance.

When they become unwittingly caught in the crossfire of a bloody and unprovoked attack, their bond begins to unravel. And even though they are able to escape through sheer luck, they are doggedly pursued by a sadistic and obsessed Sherriff who vows to inflict his own kind of vengeful justice as he chases them across the Carolina backwoods, breaking them apart with lies and intoxicating everyone with his power. Even the wise old woman in the woods whose love and protection is beyond anything these sisters have experienced, cannot prevent the sky from falling upon them, and soon the guilty are taken down.

Much later, after nearly two decades of estrangement, punishment, and darkness, a lonely and desperate husband sets out to reconnect these two women, knowing that healing the past is the only means by which he can save his wife, and the sister-in-law he has never known. With one languishing in prison and the other living a life of pretense among the elite of Atlanta, all three characters embark on a journey to unravel truth from the myth, wisdom from confessions, and restore kindness to a life that ends up glowing and whole after all.
