Happy Holidays
Hopefully everyone is staying warm andenjoying friends and family’s companyover these winter months. Ashland’sannual Old Fashioned Christmas came toa close on 12/13/08. It was another greattime for the community to come togetherand enjoy an evening out on the town.Thank you to the businesses for stayingopen extra hours to help make this eve-ning successful. Santa and some of hisreindeer joined us for the evening’s ac-tivities. Thank you to Good ShepherdLutheran Church choir for singing yourhearts out. The Live Nativity was a hitagain which was sponsored by “Lift YourSpirits Performing Arts ”. The hotchocolate and cookies tasted better thanever this year. The horse and carriageride was popular with the young and oldat heart. Thank you to everyone for com-ing out to make this a special eveningonce again.Ashland Downtown sponsored a HolidayDecorating Contest this year for Ashlandresidents and businesses. The winners were an-nounced at Old Fashioned Christmas.

By now you have probably seen some of the façade improvements in town. Notonly do we assist in façade improvements , we help with signage as well. To theleft are two entities who have taken advantage of this opportunity. The first isHeart’N Home gift shop at 1000 Centre Street. The second sign is from the Ash-land Area Historic Preservation Society. Below are excerpts from the designguidelines from www.upperschuylkill.com that are encouraged changes.

Replacing, repairing or installing signsthat are appropriately scaled for yourbuildings and storefront.
 
Maintaining and restoring historic signs.
 
Exploring very creative graphics andmaterials that maintain high standards inlegibility and character.
 
Building flexibility into signage andComponents to allow for changes orupgrades.
 
Installing signs on the sign band, windows,doors, awnings or other architecturallyappropriate location.
 
Establishing a sign band on buildings thatmay not have a clearly demarcated areafor signs.
 
Using durable wood, painted plastics,metals, or pre-fabricated pin mountedletters.
 
Installing painted metal or wood signs.
 
Installing fin or blade signs, projectedfrom the building wall, to identify abusiness to those passing by walking ortraveling parallel to the storefront.
Exploring bold and vibrant colors, stillaccording to the good graphic designpractice, as a method of distinguishinga sign while relating the sign to thestorefront design and business type orproject.
 
Painting window signs that act as asecondary signage location or thatprovide an additional level of information about the businesses,such as store hours or types of services.
 
Recommending three-dimensional,fixed signs that include an icon of thebusiness type, business name and/orlogo.
 
Illuminating signs from behind.(Backlit box signs are stronglydiscouraged.)
 
Using neon signs to indicate abusiness name or trade, but not toadvertise products or sales.
