From the Pastor’s Desk
My Dear People:The Scriptures say that we cannot ever praywithout God’s help. The fact is we cannotmake a good Lent without God’s help. Today, pray now for help to experience a meaningfulLent because it starts Wednesday. Here are some reflective thoughts on Lent:1.There is the possibility that this couldbe our last Lent before eternity. Wedoubt the possibility, but then one of our parishioners thought the sameway last year. The wonderful, vibrantMichael Dubruiel dropped off thetreadmill with a massive heart attackearly this month at the age of fifty. Oneof these Lents will be our last and it isgood to imagine that this is our last. If we thought that it might be, would our effort this Lent be better?2.If we do not improve our lives duringLent, there is every probability that wewill never get closer to Jesus than weare now.3.With our human condition, we mustmake specific resolutions during Lentso we contemplate the threepenitential practices that come fromthe Bible and Christian tradition:a.Prayeb.Fastingc.Alms givingA.PRAYER:If daily Mass is any waypossible, or at least sometimes duringthe week, this is tops. It gives us theScriptures and Jesus Himself in theEucharist. There are also theopportunities for visits to the Chapel of Our Savior. Then there are some of those prayers we used to say thathave fallen by the wayside. Since Lentis getting closer to Jesus andappreciating what He has done for our salvation, the Stations of the Cross isa beautiful devotion, contemplatinghow much Jesus loves us. This year,we will add benediction to the Stationsof the Cross on Fridays during Lent. (Itstarts at 7:00 p.m.)A week from this coming Monday westart the first full week of Lent with amission given by Deacon GlennHarmon from the western part of our country. Come and see; come andpray; come and praise God. Completing the list of our prayers, there is the Sacrament of Reconciliation every Saturday from3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., and on thethird day of the mission, March 4th, wewill have a Penance Service with eightpriests.B.FASTING : Fasting from food is apractice that strengthens our willpower to make it ever-so-strong in our commitment to Jesus. We could alsofast from T.V., gossip, and selfishways.C.ALMSGIVING : In connection withfasting from all those luxuries andtasty foods, the tradition of the Churchis to identify what we give up and givethe money not otherwise spent onourselves to the hungry. Sharing withthe needy is fundamental to our Christian faith.Lent is a holy season and holiness meansgetting closer to God. Whatever brings uscloser gives us a successful Lent.We cannot get closer to Jesus during Lentwithout His help. Just as we ask for the graceto pray, we need to ask Jesus now for thegrace to get closer to Him during this holyseason of Lent. With prayers and blessings,Father Muller
