Introduction
When it comes to evaluating operating speciications orinteractive whiteboards,
1
it is important to understand whatthe numbers mean and to be wary o claims about the abilityo dierent boards to withstand extreme temperature andhumidity conditions. The speciications used to prove ordisprove such claims may be cited out o context, and they maybe irrelevant given the other technology products that connectto your interactive whiteboard. It is best to consider operatingspeciications or interactive whiteboards in the context o thewhole technology package that you are assembling.
UnderstandingOperatingSpeciications
All technology manuacturers recommend certaintemperature ranges and humidity levels or the saeoperation o their product. These are typically set by a serieso ormal or standard tests. Product speciications oten listthis inormation under a heading such as
Environment
. Here,or example, are the operating speciications or a SMARTBoard
™
680 interactive whiteboard:
Storage
–40°F to 120°F (–40°C to 49°C) with up to95% humidity noncondensing
Operating
41°F to 95°F (5°C to 5°C) with up to 80%humidity noncondensing
Temperature ranges
The temperature ranges are straightorward. Within these, the manuacturer typically ensures a product will work. I itdoes not, the manuacturer will oten repair the deect orreplace the interactive whiteboard within a speciied period.
Relative humidity
Generally speaking,
humidity
reers to the amount o watervapor in the air relative to the amount o water vapor theair can potentially hold. But these amounts vary, dependingon temperature: warm air can hold more water vapor thancold air. The term relative humidity is used to describe thisphenomenon and is expressed as a percentage. In operating speciications, relative humidity is oten said tobe noncondensing when the manuacturer has perormeda standard environmental test conirming the point atwhich water vapor condenses to a liquid orm and coatselectronics, rendering them inoperable or unsae. At SMART, or instance, all SMART Board interactivewhiteboards undergo standard environmental tests, including temperature and humidity.
Considering theWhole Package
Interactive whiteboards do not unction in isolation. Theyare part o a system that usually includes at least a computerand projector. You should review the operating speciicationso each o these products in order to assess the optimumenvironment or an interactive whiteboard. For instance, a sae room (or ambient) temperature rangeor most computers is 60–75°F (16–24°C),
2
which is armore restrictive than the typical speciications or interactivewhiteboards. As well, many o the most commonly availableprojectors will not tolerate operating temperatures lowerthan 41°F (5°C) or more than 80% humidity noncondensing.
