OUR MISSION STATEMENT:
FIRST NOTES
A couple of weeks ago, someone asked me howshe could make the seasonof Lent more meaningful. So, I thought I’d offer someinsights I hope are helpfulas we continue our journeytoward the cross. Beloware some thoughts I’ve puttogether. Are you searching forsomething more? Tired ofrunning in circles, but notreally living life withdirection, purpose orpassion? It's pretty easy toget caught up in the dramaof classes, relationships, family, and work. Our livesare filled with distractionsthat take us away fromliving a life with Christ. Wetry to fill the emptinessinside us with mindless TV,meaningless chatter, stimulants, alcohol, toomany activities or otherirrelevant stuff. We runaway from life and from God.Lent is a great time to"repent" -- to return to Godand re-focus our lives tobe more in line with Jesus. It's a 40 day trial run inchanging your lifestyleand letting God changeyour heart. You might tryone of these practices forLent:
FASTING
: Some peoplehave been known to gowithout food for days. Butthat's not the only way tofast. You can fast bycutting out some of thethings in your life thatdistract you from God.Some Christians use thewhole 40 days to fast fromcandy, TV, soft drinks, cigarettes or meat as away to purify their bodiesand lives. You might skipone meal a day and usethat time to pray instead.Or you can give upsome
activity
like worry orreality TV to spend timeoutside enjoying God’screation. What do youneed to let go of or "fast"from in order to focus onGod? What clutters yourcalendar and life? Howcan you simplify your lifein terms of what you eat, wear or do?
SERVICE
: SomeChristians take somethingon
for
Christ. You cancollect food for the needy, volunteer once a week totutor children, or work forreform and justice in yourcommunity. You cancommit to help a differentstranger, co-worker orfriend everyday of Lent.Serving others is one waywe serve God.
PRAYER:
Christians alsouse Lent as a time ofintentional prayer. Youcan pray while you walk, create music or art as aprayer to God, or savor atime of quiet listening. Allcan be ways of becomingmore in tune with God.

Message from the Missions Committee:
The goal for the Lenten Offering is $2,000 to benefit God’s children in twoMethodist ministries in Newton, Kansas.
50% will go to Asbury Park’s Benevolent Care Fund to help God’s oldestchildren. Asbury Park takes its ministry seriously—on numerousoccasions care has been offered to the oldest children of God after they were turned away by other retirement facilities. The Benevolent CareFund supports residents who have outlived their financial resources andrequire charitable care.
50% will go to Youthville’s BIG HEARTS Campaign to help God’schildren who live or attend school there because they have been abused, abandoned or neglected. Youthville uses all BIG HEARTS CampaignFunds to directly support the needs of these children of God.

The Worship Committee will once again be hosting a Seder Meal on Maundy Thursdayevening, March 28th. Scripture says it was at a Passover meal with his disciples thatJesus shared the first Communion. Through this meal we can see the manner in whichJesus reinterpreted the Passover in light of his life and mission. During this meal, Jesusshowed the disciples that he represented a new covenant, one which delivers us fromslavery of sin.
