The Mother,her baby and the
bond
of Love
The
first love
ababy experiences is the
natural bond of love
 that develops between the
mother
and the
baby
in her womb. This bond is the basis of all love and is responsiblefor the unique and
eternal relationship
between a mother and her child. For the baby still in the
mother’s womb
,this bond is their link to the
unknown
(the mother’s womb with the external world) and the
stronger
it is,the better a baby will be able to relate with both their inner self and their
surroundings
.This bond can be strengthened in manydifferent moments:during
pregnancy
,at
birth
,when
breast-feeding
and caring for the baby.Communicating with the baby usingall
5senses
is one way to strengthen this bond.
L’amour fondamental,lien unique entrela
maman
et le
bébé
.

Awakening the senses with love and care
Communication begins at pregnancy through the senses, primarily the sense of touch.By caressing and massaging her belly, the mother gets in touch with her baby, welcoming them to life.Singing and speaking to a baby stimulates their sense of hearing, another importantway of bonding with the baby. After birth all of
 the baby's senses
should be stimulated:lovingly
looking
in their eyes,gently
massaging
and
cuddling,talking
and
singing
and
putting them incontact with skin
so that they can get to know and recognize their mother’s scent. The father can also play an important role,by caring for the mother and helping with the baby he helps to ensure a peaceful pregnancy and strengthens his bond with his child.

Taste
Breast-feeding is an intense and valuable contact between mother and baby. All the senses are stimulated during breast-feeding,in a moment of great intimacy and significance that all mothersshould enjoy whenever possible.According to the pediatrician Baumgartner

and thespeech therapist Delgado

,in addition to nourishing,breast-feeding helps develop psychomotor and socialskills and strengthens the bond of love between the mother and her baby.Breast milk is also rich inantibodies, helping protect the baby against diseases.
Sight
It is through the mother’s eyes that a baby begins to know the world. The mother represents the world to her baby and so it is through her that they get their first look into life. That is why it is so important to look a baby directly in theeyes with love and joy,it is through the mother’s feelings thatababywill feel loved and welcomed to this world,it also helps to build self-esteem a vital condition for a happy life.Lookingababyin the eyes is an important means of communicationbetween parents and baby,do so when bathing,breast-feeding,changing or simplycaring for your baby.According to research conducted by Montagner

at theUniversity of Bordeaux,by looking a baby in the eyeswe help develop abilities such as better understandingof their emotions and longer attention span. The psy-choanalyst Winnicott

says that the mother's look is thebaby's first mirror;howthe mother looks at her babhelps structure the image they will haveof themselves throughout their lives.
Smell
The sense of smell also strengthens the bond between themother and her baby. When in contact with their mother’s skin, specially her neck and chest, the baby gets to know her smelland is able to recognizeit whenever the mother is nearby.Studies conducted byMontagner

showthat a baby isable to recognize the mother's smell from as early as the third day of life, and contact with mother's smellon her breast and neck has a soothing effect.
Hearing
Singing and talking to a new-born baby helps calm and adapt them to the new world.During pregnancy, singing and talking to your baby telling them about your feelings, joys and sorrows, deeds and worries, conveys acceptance and calm, awakening the baby to sounds and introducing them to their mother’svoice. After birth,a baby can recognize the mother’s voice andeven the songs sang to them in the womb. These familiar soundsremind the baby of the warmth and safety of the mother'swomb, making them feel safer in their new environment. The fetus captures the vibrations of the soundsand words uttered by the parents, with all theemotions associated to them. From the 20thweek of pregnancy, babies can hear and understandemotions in the sounds.
Touch
Touch is a very important exchange between parents andbaby.During pregnancy, the mother can caress and massageher belly, knowing that her baby can feel her touch and isaware of her welcome. After birth, hugging, cuddling, and massaging helpdevelop the parent bond with the baby.Studies show that from as early as the 18th week of pregnancy a babyreacts to touch, and can attachmeaning to it.Caressing the mother’s belly makes the baby feel loved and welcome. After birth (from the 1st month),research conducted at the University of Miami Medical School and the Duke University Medical School show that babies that receivemassages sleep better, gain more weight, cry less, are more active, alert and aware of their surroundings.(1),(2),(3),(4),see Bibliography
