Whats Manifest Destiny? Manifest Destiny: The belief that the United States had the right and the obligation to expand across the North American Continent.

15.2 What Was the Louisiana Purchase?


Why Louisiana? Why do you think the U.S. wanted the territory? U.S. wanted Louisiana because farmers living west of the Appalachians needed a port city (New Orleans) to move their crops.

Why is the Mississippi so important?

Who Owns Louisiana?


Can you remember who originally sailed down the Mississippi and claimed Louisiana? Louisiana was originally owned by France, who gave it to Spain, who then returned it to France. U.S. farmers were worried that Napoleon would close the port to American goods.

What was the Noble Bargain?


Jefferson sent Monroe to France in 1803 to buy New Orleans. Guess what Napoleon agreed to sell Napoleon agreed to sell the entire Louisiana territory. The purchase doubled the size of the U.S.

Why Debate the Issue?


What could possibly be wrong with it? Some thought it would be hard to govern, others felt it was too expensive (at 3 cents an acre), and easterners feared they would lose power to westerners.

15.3 How Did We Get Florida?


Who Owned Florida? Can you remember who first explored Florida? Florida was owned by Spain who refused to sell it. It had a diverse population that clashed with settlers in Georgia.

Why Did Jackson Invade Florida?


1818, Monroe sends Jackson to Florida to stop raids in Georgia. Can you imagine what he did instead? Instead, w/ 1,700 troops, he captures every military post and replaces the Spanish gov. with an American.

Govern or Get Out


Sec. of State J.Q.A. convinced Monroe to tell Spain to govern properly in Florida, or get out. Fearful of war, Spain gave Florida to the U.S. and U.S. agreed to honor Spains claim to Texas. By this, the U.S. acquired Louisiana and Florida through diplomacy (negotiations).
