Occupy action looms in Cincy

Its a fact that Occupy Campbell County will soon be teaming up with Occupy Cincinnati for an action against a major Cincinnati corporation. We hope it can happen in March, but this is not a guarantee. Check our website frequently for details. (Our website address is in the header of this newsletter, and Im sure you have it in your favorites list anyway, dont you?) Also, other major actions will take place if the right-wing Supreme Court strikes down the landmark 1965 Voting Rights Actas theyre threatening to do. Leave it to the Supreme Court to think the unthinkable, but thats what theyve come to.

Occupy group sues over Volcker delay

The government tries to enforce 150-year-old laws against cohabitation, but they wont enforce the Volcker Rule? The Volcker Rule is part of the Dodd-Frank Act of 2010 and restricts banks from proprietary trading and gambling with customers money. It was passed after the banks bad bets had deepened the Great Recession. President Obama specifically endorsed the Volcker Rule, but government agencies that are supposed to enforce it still havent done so. So now Occupy the SEC (which itself evolved from an Occupy Wall Street working group) is suing the SEC, FDIC, Federal Reserve, U.S. Treasury, and others for refusing to implement the Volcker Rule. As has happened with other laws designed to regulate Big Business, the agencies refusal to enforce the Volcker Rule amounts to outright regulatory defiance. Its like how the FCC is a rubber stamp for broadcasting companies buying too many stations (even while the FCC drops the hammer on 1-watt pirate stations that dont harm anyone). Will Occupys lawsuit succeed? Unfortunately, that may depend on what the public thinks, which in turn may depend on whether the dinosaur media covers the suit. The Really Serious People in the press are too busy with their own race-baiting nonstories to publish any story that requires readers to think. Actually, the Volcker Rule as it was passed was watered down from what was originally proposed. Its still too much for the SEC and the other agencies named in the suit to handle. Grade school must have been tough for them.

Occupy actions wed like to see

The Occupy coalition in America accomplished more in its first year than the rest of the progressive movement did in the previous 30 years. But it can do moreand it will. Below are some actions Id like to see Occupy launch. We desperately need to Occupy The Media. The presss bias is surely the biggest barrier to progress of allbar none. The New York Post was targeted after lying about Occupy, but this action

needs to be copied in other cities. The Media has more sway than anybody else in deciding what issues are at hand and what people are supposed to think about these issues. Also, our schools need their own Occupy chapters. In the meantime, Occupys existing chapters need to step up their actions on student rights. Finally, Id love to see Occupy team up with labor to endorse a general strikenot just one that lasts a day, but one that lasts until so-called right-to-work laws are repealed. Occupy may be Americas last hope, and its time to step it up.
