The roots of the University of California go back to the mid

19th century, when hundreds of thousands of fortune
seekers came west in the gold rush.

The University of California, led by former clergyman Henry

Durant and modeled after Yale and Harvard, featured core
courses in Latin, Greek, history, English, mathematics, and
natural history, with the addition of modern languages.

Though it had little funding, it had land — both in Oakland

and four miles north at a town site eventually named for
George Berkeley, an 18th-century Irish philosopher and
bishop.

A "tiny band of scholars" — 10 faculty members and nearly

40 students — made up the new University of California
when it opened in Oakland in 1869.

TODAY:
Number of students: 35,409 students as of Fall 2008
including 25,151 undergraduates and 10,258 pursuing
graduate degrees.
Rankings: According to the National Research Council, 35
of 36 Berkeley graduate programs rank in the top 10 in their
respective fields. Berkeley is the only university in the nation
to achieve top 5 rankings for all of its PhD programs in those
disciplines covered by the US News and World Report
graduate school survey.

organization that could be called Cal
EURO
 Cal EURO is a mechanism for the
different alumni groups to share their
best resources: people (alumni,
speakers), places (travel/events) and
things (still being debated).
 For the moment, those groups that have
expressed interest are those on the left.
