Buddhi:
Can you tell meabout general roles inAmerica? Is it that womendo cooking or the menhelp out or how is itdone?
Todd:
I think it's changeda lot over the years. It’ssimilar to what you saidin your country. America'sprobably maybe one of the leading countries intrying to make it moreequal, so yeah, so nowit's ... the men aresupposed to help cookand clean and stuff. Butactually what I findinteresting is that over time I think people stillsettle into their old habits.I think that young couplesstart off that the husbandsgonna cook and he'sgonna help clean but asthey get older naturally itdoes seem like womenrevert to more care-takingroles and men kind of getlazy I think. You know.Although, I have to say, growing up my step-father was pretty amazing. Hewas really good atcooking and he cooked alot and he actually usedto get home before mymother. She also worked. So he would do the mostof the cooking, and hewas actually the better cook, but my mom's agood cook too.
Buddhi:
So looking athim, did you ever want tolearn cooking and did youever think like, "OK, whenI grow up I'll always helpwhoever was around."
Todd:
No, it wasactually .... I'm quiteashamed. I never didreally learn cooking fromhim or my mother, so theynever really showed me,so even to this day I'm apretty terrible cook. Sowhat about you? Did your mother show you how tocook?
Buddhi:
She did, it's justthat I didn't learn and mybrother ended up learningall the cooking and he's avery good cook right now,and it makes me be veryashamed of myself, but ...
Todd:
So wait a minute.Wait a minute. Your momactually took the time toshow you how to cook, and you say you still can'tcook?
Buddhi:
Yes!!!!
Todd:
Why? Whathappened?
Buddhi:
I don't know. Idon't know. Sri Lankancooking is so difficult andit takes ... it’s really timeconsuming, but I wouldn'twant to say that out tooloud cause there aresome like many goodcooks as well, it's just thatI'm not good at it, but .... Imean, I'm not
that
bad. It's just that my fooddoesn't turn out to be asgood as my mom's.
Todd:
Right.
