Ward 5 Highlights: The Ward 5 Industrial Land Transformation Task Force Holds Its Kick-Off Meeting

On February 27, the Ward 5 Industrial Land Transformation Task Force held its inaugural meeting. Members were sworn in by Darryl Gorman, Director of the Office of Boards and Commissions (OBC), and discussed innovative ways of transforming Ward 5s industrial land. I am very excited that we are beginning the work of transforming the industrial land in Ward 5, said Councilmember McDuffie. It is important that we not only see change that benefits new residents, but change that benefits current residents. I am looking forward to working with the Task Force over the next few months to make sure we develop a comprehensive plan that every resident in Ward 5 can be proud of. The task force, established by Mayor Vincent C. Gray (D) and Councilmember McDuffie, looks to develop a strategic and forward-looking plan to transform these industrial areas into a magnet for green and creative businesses, create jobs for a variety of skill levels, and provide the amenities and services desired by residents. The Task Force is expected to submit a draft report to the Mayor and the Council by January 31, 2014.

Councilmember McDuffie Honors the Outstanding Efforts of MPD Officers

On February 28, Councilmember McDuffie attended the Metropolitan Police Departments (MPD) Thirteenth Annual Awards Ceremony. The ceremony, held at the Elstad Auditorium on the Gallaudet University campus, honored the accomplishments of the members of MPD and their community partners for their outstanding efforts over the past year. The District of Columbia has the best police force in the entire country, said Councilmember McDuffie. I congratulate all the men and women honored this year and appreciate everything MPD does to keep our communities safe. Councilmember McDuffie and DC Agencies Hold a Langdon Park Walk Through On February 23, Councilmember McDuffie led a follow-up walk through with the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR), the Department of General Services (DGS), the Department of Transportation (DDOT), MPD and ANC Commissioner Nolan Treadway. The walk through was a follow up to the one held in early December. During the walk through, Councilmember McDuffie and the various agencies covered several issues related to Langdon Park. Ward 5 Community Office Hours On February 26, Councilmember McDuffie held the Ward 5 Community Engagement Office Hours at Windows Caf, Rhode Island Avenue, NE. During the meeting, Councilmember McDuffie outlined his agenda and heard community input on how his office could better serve the community. Additionally, MPD discussed the latest crime report for the area. The Community Engagement Office Hours is a tradition that Councilmember McDuffie started shortly after taking office. These meetings are designed to give Ward 5 residents a venue to voice their concerns and offer suggestions without having to travel to the John A. Wilson Building. Councilmember McDuffie Visits Noyes Education Campus with the Harlem Globetrotters

On February 27, Councilmember McDuffie joined member of the Harlem Globetrotters during their visit of Noyes Education Campus. The Harlem Globetrotters stopped by Noyes as a part of their community outreach program, "The ABCs of Bullying Prevention, an effort to impact schools and communities around the world. Councilmember McDuffie would like to thank Principal Winston Cox for the great work he is doing in our community by educating our students and exposing them to such important programing.

Legislative Updates: The Committee on Government Operations Holds Hearings to Discuss Campaign Finance Training and Constituent Service Legislation On March 7, Councilmember McDuffie, Chairperson of the Committee on Government Operations, will convene a public hearing on the Constituent-Service Program Amendments Act of 2013 and, the Campaign Finance Training Amendment Act of 2013. This public hearing will be held in Room 120 of the John A. Wilson Building, 1350 Pennsylvania Ave, NW at 11:00 a.m. The purpose of the Constituent-Service Program Amendments Act of 2013 is to prohibit the use of funds from constituent-service programs from being used to purchase tickets to professional sporting events, concerts, theatrical performances, or cultural events. The purpose of the Campaign Finance Training Amendment Act of 2013 is to require a candidate for public office and the treasurer of any political, exploratory, inaugural, transition, and legal defense committee to attend a training program conducted by the Office of Campaign Finance; and to prohibit contributions and expenditures from being accepted or made by or on behalf of any candidate, political, exploratory, inaugural, transition, or legal defense committee prior to covered persons completing the required training. Performance Oversight Hearings for the Committee on Government Operations On March 11, the Committee on Government Operations has scheduled the following annual performance oversight hearings for the agencies under its purview: Executive Office of the Mayor, including the Office of Policy and Legislative Affairs, Serve DC, and the Office of Community Affairs Office of the Chief Technology Officer Office of the City Administrator Secretary of the District of Columbia (including the Notaries Public Board of Review)

The hearing will be at 10:00 a.m. in Room 412 of the John A. Wilson Building. Announcements Councilmember McDuffie Hosts Flood Hazard Protection Town Hall Forum On March 5, Councilmember McDuffie will co-host a community town hall with Councilmember Jim Graham (D Ward 1) Councilmember Vincent Orange (D At-Large), Councilmember Anita Bonds (D At-Large) and the DC Insurance Federation to educate residents in the more flood prone sections of the city as to why their homeowners policy is not flood insurance and what resources are available to help consumers find protection from flooding hazards.
