So, next week Ihave to do a debate in myfinance class.
Diego:
Oh, really, whatis your debate about?
Hanna:
Our debate topicis about whether weshould teach finance tokids, so things likeinvestment and the stockmarket. Things like tax.
Diego:
OK, and what doyou think about the topic?
Hanna:
I think it is reallyimportant that kids learnabout things like this,particularly our societythese days, where literallyeverything revolvesaround money. I mean,even when you'refourteen or fifteen, you goout and get a job and youhave to start doing thingslike paying tax, and Imean, you're gonna havesavings, and you caninvest that if you wantedto and turn that into moremoney, so even whenyou're really young I thinkit is important to know thiskind of information.
Diego:
But don't youthink that there's a lot of consequences whenyou're burdening kidsfrom ... what was it -middle school, highschool with financialresponsibilities? I meankids are kids after all.Shouldn't they be playingaround ... going to thepark instead of worryingabout the stock marketcrashing in Europe or inThe States?
Hanna:
Well, they don'thave to worry about thestock market crashing,but I think it is good if theyknow a little bit of information about it.
Diego:
But if they have allthe information every timethere's a drop in GEstocks, they're going toflip out and you know,they won't be able tosleep and you're givingkids too much to worryabout in an age theyshouldn't be worryingabout these things. It isafter all they're parents'responsibility to worryabout these things, andeventually it's going to betheir turn but I think it's just giving themsomething before theyhave to worry about it.
Hanna:
So you think junior high school is tooearly to start to startteaching kids about thiskind of stuff?
Diego:
I think so. Yeah.Especially when you'remaking it because theyhave to take responsibilityof their own moneyconsidering the fact thatthey don't even have anincome.
Hanna:
What if they dohave an income?
Diego:
Well, their incomewould be like five dollarsan hour, so I don't thinkthey'll be investinganything of that.
Hanna:
Well, you never know.
