Since the reform and attractive foreign investment, Binh Duong’s economy has achieved a fast growth. However, the traditional economic growth model with high investments, consumption, and high emissions causes a growing contradiction between economic growth and the environment. There is a general perception that environmental degradation is driven by economic growth. In order to clarify this, author conducted assessment of the interactions between economic growth and environmental quality in Binh Duong province.
The aim of study seeks the interactions between economic growth and environmental quality. The study used main methods such as regression analysis, the air quality index and the water quality index, multi-criteria and a weight method. The results of study show the following:
- Environmental pressures caused by socio-economy activities, especially industries.
- The most of the monitoring stations of water have polluted and AQI has been generally moderate. However, WQI and AQI have been improving in recent years. Besides, some districts having high economic performance have lower the environmental quality than other.
- There are significant correlation between per capita GDP, industrial GDP and the environmental quality. Comparing the correlation between AQI and WQI shows that AQI has stronger correlation than WQI (R2AQI = 0,933 > RWQI2 = 0,678). The high regression coefficients have found in the industrial developing areas such as Thuan An and Di An districts.
- The study also built, evaluated and compared the sustainability competitiveness index between industrial sectors. The result shows that wood and wood products, wearing, and electricity – gas and water supply have high competitive scores. On the other hand, stone and other mining industry, leather tanning and processing, and papermaking – stationery manufacturing have low competitive scores.
