PRACTICAL 4 : STUDY OF FAST E NERS
INTRODUCTION:
Threaded fasteners are hardware components with external orinternal threads.
A screw, a nut and a bolt are common threaded fastenerswhich joins a number of components together.
Screw is externally threaded – assembled into a blind threadedhole
.
Bolt is also externally threaded – inserted through holes in theparts and “screwed” into a nut on the opposite side.Nut is internally threaded – threads of a nut match those on boltsof the same diameter, pitch, and thread form The same fastener could be a bolt or a screw, depending on if anut is used. Studs are threaded at both ends.
Washers
used with threaded fasteners to ensure tightness.Common types – (a) plain (flat) washer; (b) spring washers, todampen vibration or compensate for wear; and (c) lock washer, toresist loosening.

Washers serve various functions:
Distribute stresses at the bolt or screw head and nut
Provide clearance for large holes
Protect part surface
Seal the joint
Resist inadvertent unfastening The
screw
- a generic name applied to a setscrew, lead screw, bolt, stud or other component equipped with an external thread, the
nut
- refers to any component whose internal threadengages the screw, such as the nut of a nut & bolt or a largestationary casting with a tapped hole into which a stud isscrewed.
Rivets
unthreaded, headed pin used for achieving apermanent mechanically fastened joint.
