SEASON OF LENTAsh Wednesday Feb. 25th — Holy Saturday March 11thLiturgically, Lent begins with Ash Wednesday and ends on Thursday of HolyWeek when the Holy Triduum begins. The Holy Triduum includes HolyThursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday.Lent is for us a time of renewal, conversion, penance and reparation.Christian penance traditionally involves prayer, fasting, and works of charity. In our times it may be appropriate, even necessary, in many instances to putless emphasis on fasting and more on penance which includes prayer, receiving the sacraments and in doing charitable works. But the witness of Scripture and the life of the Church will not let us abandon corporalpenances. Fasting and abstinence are encouraged in Lent.LENTEN REGULATIONS—FAST AND ABSTINENCEThe fifth precept of the Church binds Catholics to observe the prescribed daysof fast and abstinence. This is intended to establish the minimum response of afaithful Catholic to the Lord’s call to repentance, conversion and penance.Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are the days of Fast. Catholics who are 18years old but not yet 59 are obliged to Fast, that is take only one full meal andtwo lesser meals, with nothing to eat between meals. Drinking fluids would notbe contrary to the practice of fasting.Ash Wednesday, the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday are the days of Abstinence. All Catholics who are 14 years old and older are obliged toabstain from eating meat.Catholics have a serious obligation to join together in the common observanceof the above days of fast and abstinence. No one should be scrupulous in thisregard, but neither should they excuse themselves for any light reason. Peoplewho are not able to practice bodily penance, perhaps due to pregnancy, illnessor having to do hard physical labor should choose a different work of penanceor of charity. It would be ideal if works of penance were linked to works of charity, for example, if the money saved by eating less or less expensive mealswould be given in charity to feed the poor.***All the Fridays of the year are days of penance, in commemoration of theLord’s Passion, but they are not necessarily days of fast and abstinence. Onthese days it is left to the choice of each individual Catholic to practice somework of penance—which could be fasting or abstaining from meat—or a workof charity. On Ash Wednesday, the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday, however, Catholics are obliged to practice fasting and/or abstainingspecifically.***
