PRACTICAL 8 : STUDY OF CLUTCHES & GEARSCLUTCH:
A
clutch
is a mechanism for transmitting rotation, which can be engaged anddisengaged. Clutches are useful in devices that have two rotating shafts. In thesedevices, one shaft is typically driven by a motor or pulley, and the other shaftdrives another device. In a drill, for instance, one shaft is driven by a motor, andthe other drives a drill chuck. The clutch connects the two shafts so that they caneither be locked together and spin at the same speed (engaged), or be decoupledand spin at different speeds (disengaged).
The figure below showsdriving and driven shafts of a machine, where the drivenshaft can be disconnected almost instantaneously from the driving shaft as desired by the operator or driver.
Classification of CLUTCHES;
1.
Friction-Plate clutch
2.
Cone clutch
3.
Hydraulic clutch
4.
Semi-centrifugal clutch
5.
Centrifugal clutch

Single plate clutch:
The sketch shows the single plate clutch used for automobiles, particularlyfor cars
Driving shaft is fixed to the flywheel
When the force from the operating lever is released, the springs will exertan axial force on the pressure plate and it forces the friction rings to come incontact with friction plate.
The frictional force between the plate and rings transmits a torque on thedriven shaft which causes the driven shaft to revolve at the speed of the drivingshaft. Hence this system enables the driven shaft to be stopped or rotates atthe will of the operator.
Cone clutch:

There are two cones covered in friction material and when they areforcedapart they rub against the outer casings and lock them together thusengaging the two halves.
It transmits rotation from one shaft to another through friction forces onthe conical face.
