Ridiculing theopposition AIADMK forseeking dismissal of theDMK Government byinvoking Aticle 356 of theConstitution, Tami NaduChief Minister MKarunanidhi today said theSupreme Court has givena fitting reply to the partystating the demand waspoliticaly motivated.Answering a setof questions, the ChiefMinister said whenAIADMK leader DJayakumar moved theapex court seeking adirection to dismiss theGovernment, invokingArticle 356 for the clashbetween police andlawyers, the Judges saidthe demand was politicallymotivated and they werenot Governors toconcede the demand.He saidright from theday when theDMK came topower in May2006, AIADMKSupremo JJayalalithaa hadbeen demandingthe dismissal ofthe government,even if there wasa minor problemin the state.None ofher statementwould completewithout ademand that theDMKGovernmentshould besacked, Mr Karunanidhisaid, adding after trying invain through statements,the AIADMK had movedthe Supreme Court withthe demand.Listing out theseries of incidents thattook place during thepreviousAIADMKregime,including hismidnight arrest,attack on theconvoy of thethen GovernorChenna Reddy,gheraoing ofthen ChiefElectionCommissionerT N Seshan andattempt tomurder ofadvocatesShanmugasundaram andVijayan, MrKarunanidhisaid those whowere at the helm of affairswhen all these incidentsoccurred, were seekingthe dismissal of the DMKGovernment now.He said theAIADMK, which tookserious exception tothrowing of eggs atJanata Party PresidentSubramaniam Swamy ina court hall, hadorganised obsceneagitation against him inthe same court complexand people had notforgotten them.Mr Karunanidhisaid the AIADMK, whichwas demanding thedismissal of the DMKGovernment on theground that functioningof courts have come to astandstill, should realisethat the AIADMKGovernment was notsacked when the entireadministration wasparalysed after it sackedmore than 10 lakhgovernment employeesand arrested more than20,000 employees in onesingle night.On MsJayalalithaa's demand thatthe Election Commissionshould probe into thealleged irregularities in theThirumangalam Assemblybye-election and ensurefree and fair Lok Sabhapoll, he said the AIADMKleader would continue tomake such pleas, till theElection Commissionallowed her a free hand inthe elections and declaredwins by herself.

Big Macco-existed with Big Marxfor four years,'' he saidand added that coalitionexists everywhere andmore states were undercoalition regimes.The journalisthowever, said coalitiongovernments, too, coulddeliver Major reform andpointed out that theboldest economicreforms was introducedby a ''minority''government in 1991.''Unstable polityhad co-existed with afairly stable economicpolicy through the 90s till2004,'' he said.Stating thatthere was no majority in astate like Tamil Nadu, MrChawala in 1967 therewere 10 parties, 234constituencies, 778contestants and none ofthem lost their deposits.''But in 2006,there are 36 parties,same 234constituencies, 2586candidates and 2102 ofthem have forfeited theirdeposits,'' he added.''Tamil Nadu,the once golden state, isnow going down as theCAGR came down to 5.6during 1999-2000 to2007-08, as against theAll India rate of 7.3 percent,'' he said and addedfor the first time keyeconomic portfolios weregiven to the State.Observing thatthe UPA's CommonMinimum Programmewas full of contradictions,Mr Chawla said this wasreason for the slow paceof reforms, despite thegovernment having thebest pedigree ofreformers.  In order to easetraffic congestion,especially during peakhours, the Tamil Nadugovernment plans toconstruct another 10flyovers and subwaysacross the city.Announcing thisin the State Assembly onThursday,localAdministration Minister MK Stalin said the flyoverswould come up atPerambur, CenotaphRoad, Rangarajapuram,Kathivakkam HighwayRoad, Alandur Salai, MintStreet and Vysarpadi.Subways wouldalso be built atVillivakkam, RoyapuramManiyakarat and JonesRoad at Saidapet, Stalinsaid. Apart from this, avehicular subway wouldbe built at a cost of Rs 4crore at BhojarajaRailway junction nearKorukkupet at a cost of Rs6.28 crore. Steps werebeing taken to widen thePerambur LocomotiveWorks flyover at Rs 9.50crore, he added.

 In a minorreshuffle of the Tamil NaduCabinet, Chief Minister MKarunanidhi on Thursdayre-inducted former MinisterPoongothai Aladi Arunaand designated her as thenew Minister forInformation Technology.On the advice ofthe Chief Minister,Governor S S Barnalaappointed Ms Poongothaias the IT Minister, aportfolio hitherto held by MrKarunanidhi.This was thefirst time the Tamil Nadugovernment appointed aseparate Minister for theIT department.Ms Poongothai,who was the formerSocial Welfare Minister,had resigned followingallegations that she triedto rescue her relative,working in Tamil NaduElectricity Board, from acorruption case.The telephonicconversations she hadwith former DVAC ChiefS K Upadhyaya wasmade public by JanataParty PresidentSubramanian Swamyand the excerpts werepublished by anewspaper.She later quit asMinister on the advise ofMr Karunanidhi.Ms Poongothaiwould be sworn in asMinister tomorrow at theRaj Bhawan.

 Alleging large-scale irregularities in therecently heldThirumangalam Assemblyby-election, AIADMKGeneral secretary JJayalalithaa on Thursdayurged the Chief ElectionCommissioner (CEC) toensure that theforthcoming elections wereconducted in a free and fairmanner.In a letter to theCEC, copy of which wasmade available to themedia, Ms Jayalalithaa,presenting the diaries ofthe Presiding Officers in theThirumangalam by-election, said the officershad reported that the totalnumber of votes polled intheir respective pollingstations had been fullycaused by the number ofvotes cast during the lasttwo-hour period from1500 hrs to 1700 hrs.''This confirmsthe suspicion of huge pollmanipulation towards theclosing phase of the poll.This should beinvestigated fully and theexplanation from everyofficer concerned shouldbe obtained'', she saidand demanded actionagainst the errant officersand debar them fromelection duty.The AIADMKsupremo said theobservers appointed bythe Election Commissionto supervise the conductof the election were noteffective in ensuring afree and fair poll.Ms Jayalalithaasaid she was moreinterested in improvingthe norms of free and fairelections rather thanbenefiting herself or herparty.''Success andfailure are common in thepolitical arena and areoften reversible for anyparty or individual. Butany diabolic misuse ofthe electoral processshould not be allowed todefeat the very purposeof a democratic electoralpratice.Free and fairelection is the basicrequirement for therepresentative system ofa parliamentarydemocracy'', she added.

 A city-based lawyer in a legal notice on Thursday asked the Tamil NaduAssembly Speaker to expunge certain remarks by state Finance Minister KAnbazhagan which allegedly defamed advocates and the profession.Advocate K Balu, who is also the president of Advocates Forum for SocialJustice, alleged that the defamatory statement was made "with a malafide intention soas to put the name and fame of the profession towards an irretrievable state".He said if the minister did not tender an unconditional apology for his remarks withinthree days of the reciept of the notice he would initiate appropriate legal action againsthim.

The Tamil NaduAssembly, which met forthe budget session onFebruary 17, was onThursday adjourned sinedie, a day ahead of itsschedule.As there was nobusiness left for tomorrow,the Business AdvisoryCommittee, comprisingleaders of all legislatureparties met this morningand decided to end thesession today itself.It was widelyexpected that ChiefMinister M Karunandhi,who is recuperating in ahospital after a spinesurgery, might come to theHouse on the last day ofthe session, but he sent aletter, expressing hisinability to attend.The sessionbegan on February 17,when Finance Minister KAnbazhagan presentedthe budget for the year2009-10. It came to anend within fortnight inview of the coming LokSabha elections, duringwhich, leaders andlegislators of all politicalparties would be busywith electioneering.On the last dayof the session, theHouse, besides passingdemands for advancegrants for the year 2009-10 and passing theappropriation Bill,unanimously adopted aBill, seeking to providethree per cent exclusivereservation forArunthadhiyars, a sub-caste of the scheduledcaste.MrKarunanidhi, in his letter,which was read out byLocal AdministrationMinister M K Stalin, saidhe was very muchinterested in coming tothe House, but Doctorsadvised him againstvisiting the House.The OppositionAIADMK boycotted thebudget on the openingday and pandemoniumbroke out in the House,when the Oppositionmembers were enmasseevicted from the Houseon February 20, whenthey wanted to discussthe police-lawyers clash,after adjourningQuestion Hour.Leader of theOpposition JJayalalithaa, whoabstained fromattending theproceedings, came tosign the attendanceregister kept in the lobbyto keep her membershipalive.
