DEFINITIONS OF KEY TERMSTerm Definition
Code/ SyntaxA set of command codes for statistical analysis that enable acommercially available software program to executestatistical analysis and export the data from this model intoteacher and school level reports for the DOE (collectively,the “Syntax” or “Code”). Includes the code used to run thevalue-added model and codes to generate the reports.DOE (NYCDOE) New York City Department of EducationELA English Language Arts.Original ModelThe value-added model the DOE used in 2008-09 covering2007-08 testing year and 2 years prior.Significant Changes InModel/ModelingMajor changes to the statistical methodology used in theDOE’s existing model for grades 4-8.Teacher Data InitiativeThe Initiative designed to:
Develop analytic models that evaluate thecontribution that individual teachers add tostudent achievement as measured bystandardized test scores.
Provide this information to principals andteachers in an accessible form.
Train and support principals and teachers inusing this data.
Use these data to better understand how toimprove instruction.Teacher Data ReportsReports that summarize and display value-added data inways that help teachers and schools better understand howtheir efforts are influencing student progress. In 2008-09,individual reports were provided for teachers of ELA and/ormath in grades 4-8 and summary reports were provided forelementary and middle schools.Value-added“Value-added” is a statistical term which, in the context ofthe Teacher Data Initiative, refers to how much an individualteacher contributes to his/her students’ gains on the stateELA and Math tests, controlling for various student,classroom, school and teacher characteristics.Value-Added Modeling(Technical Modeling)The process of developing and running analytic models thatmeasure the contribution that individual teachers add tostudent achievement.
