OSAS and Backslider
An in depth look.
The whole issue stems from some very minor interpretation issues. Are we talking abouta backslider as in Proverbs 14:14, or are we talking some one that stumbled and with outforethought sinned? The main issue is taking some scripture out of context. This leadsto a disastrous situation. So as not to run into this again we are going to be using lots ofscripture in contextual format, ie; paragraphs, chapters, parables and their references.Quote
“Is it possible for someone to be truly saved and backslide? From what I've read I believe this to be impossible. And that's the part that gets me. If we backslide then we were never truly saved at the beginning. We were merely saying we were saved...not that we really were saved.“
Ok 2 questions so I am going to address them separately. First let's see what it is tobackslide.Below are modern descriptions of backsliding. one from Webster and one fromEastons Bible Dictionary.1) Can some one that is truly saved backslide.a)Main Entry:back·slidePronunciation:\-slīd\

to draw back or apostatize in matters of religion Ac 21:21 2Th 2:3 1Ti 4:1 This maybe either partial Pr 14:14 or complete Heb 6:4-6 10:38,39 The apostasy may be bothdoctrinal and moral.Eastons Bible Dictionary. When we have a truly repentant heart, and we accept Messiah Yeshua/Jesus in to ourhearts and lives, on a personal level we have HIM living with in us. There is noconceivable way to give that away. Even if we sin, which we can fall as we see in thesescriptures. But we are given a chance to repent. As He is there to guide us. Now inthe scriptures below when taken in context you will see that we are secured in oursalvation, but because we are human still are subject to the influence of man. It ishow we deal with that influence that matters. When influenced by the world, or thedoctrines of man, or the doctrines of others we are to exercise ourselves untorighteousness. Instead of giving in to the influences we stand firm in our Saviour. He shows us in Timothy below that if we focus on the things of G-d our ability togrow and strengthen is increased.
1 Timothy 4:1-16 KJV 1 Timothy 4:1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; 2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; 3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: 5 For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.6 If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained.7 But refuse profane and old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness.8 For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.9 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation.10 For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe.11 These things command and teach.12 Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.13 Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.14 Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the

laying on of the hands of the presbytery.

15 Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.16 Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.
As we see below, those that continuously “fall away” and “return” putting MessiahYeshua/Jesus back on the cross only do so to put Him to shame, mocking. That is notthe action of a person that is saved. That is not the action of a person with MessiahYeshua/Jesus living inside of them. This action is indicative of “Cheap Grace”. Thekind of grace of convenience that many often use when they think they aremanipulating G-d. They are the acts of an unsaved person. If they were truly saved itis impossible for them to, just give it away or to fall away.
Hebrews 6:4-6 KJV 4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly  gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,6 If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.
The “just” live by faith. Those of the saving knowledge of Messiah Yeshua/Jesus liveand walk by Faith. Those that do NOT walk and live by Faith are not of G-d. As His soul has no pleasurein him (man).
Hebrews 10:38-39 KJV 38 Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.39 But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.
Proverbs 14:14 says it best, the backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways.If a man is filled with his own ways there is no room for Messiah Yeshua/Jesus. Andthey never truly had what G-d offered. They never took that step and moved onfaith. In most cases this is the action of lip-service. A person claiming “salvation” orfollowing a set of “rules” “steps” “doctrines” “dogmas” wanting what others have butnot committing to what G-d asks of us in return. (I posted the rest of Proverbs 14 asit supports itself).
