WHY INVEST IN AFRICA TODAY:
When some think of Africa, they think rst of 
its overwhelming problems. Indeed the reality of 
widespread conict, HIV/AIDS, and abject poverty
paint a bleak picture of the continent. However,the work of Ashoka has provided me with theextraordinary privilege of witnessing solutionsto these seemingly intractable problems.Ashoka and our Fellows shatter the conventionalperspective of Africa as a continent bereftof leadership and entrepreneurial know-how for solving its problems without interventions by aidagencies. Unlike many international NGOs, Ashoka does notapply externally-generated ideas to local problems. For almosttwenty years, Ashoka has searched for and invested in Africa’sleading social entrepreneurs, named Ashoka Fellows. Fellows arelocal innovators with new ideas to solve the world’s most urgentand deeply-rooted social problems. Our dynamic innovators bringhome-grown solutions to their communities’ problems, buildingthe foundation of lasting social change in Africa.We extend the opportunity for you to partner with us in selectingand supporting the leaders who are changing Africa.

For all the current media attention on Africa—its health, environment, governance, and human rights—there is still woefullyinadequate focus on the huge role Africans can play in creating groundbreaking solutions to the continent’s problems. Ashokais at the forefront of the African Renaissance promoting African social entrepreneurs as a unique and effective mechanism totransform the African continent.Our goal for FY09 is to elect 30 leading social entrepreneurs and increase the networking activities of our 350 Fellows. Thisyear we intend to bring our youth programming, Youth Venture, to Sahel West Africa and empower young people to createchange in their communities. This $3 million fund will enable Ashoka in Africa to grow our fellowship, enhance the resourcesand services we provide our Fellows, and lay the groundwork for our expansion into Ethiopia, Rwanda, and Liberia.
