I understand, the currentadministration’s proposal tochange the Tri-Care for Life
 benefits for military retirees is
in the mill in Washington, DC.
Specifically, Retired Military
is in Article 189. Accordingly,I quote, “if approved by Con-
gress, the first assault wave
would hit the beaches in 2011and would hit hard. It wouldinitiate cost sharing to require
retirees pay the first $525 of
medical cost and 50% of the
next $4,725 for a first year costof $2,888 per person. It would
be indexed to increase with in-
flation. A reason given for this
action for PR effect is ‘overuse’ by Retirees.” In a nutshell, this information is not at allfavorable to military retireesto include dependents. In thiseconomic meltdown, this is go-ing to be a big blow well belowour belts which can detonatewith total outburst ripping outour already-torn pockets!Military Retirees, let us wakeup! Be vigilant not to let thishappen. It is time for us todust off and don our uniforms
and relentlessly fight for themedical benefits we earned by
virtue of our dedication, self-
sacrifice and faithful service to
this great country. Let us be
united to fight in a revolution-
ary battle against the rhetori-cal politicians who probablyhave not the slightest idea whatmost of us have been through.I encourage you to write thePresident, your Congressmenand Senators and express your strong opposition to changethe current Tri-care programfor the retirees. Accordingly, Iwill qoute again, “there is evenstrong proposal to eliminate the program.” Your great weapon isyour quill which is effectively powerful than the sword! Donot just write once but manymany times until you run outof ink. You may also call them. Our cry must be extremely loudto be heard that will shake theWashington, D.C. establish-ments. Let’s even be ready touse our own blood to write and
fight until we win this battle
for survival. None of us should be idle! Pass it along to other retirees about our skirmishassault with solid strength andmilitary might! Be ready and be persistent! You’ve been trained
how to fight many battles!
“Let’s roll” shipmates! NOW!Let me share my concern.Like many retired disabledretirees, I often sought medi-cal treatments in Balboa NavalHospital. However, being re-tired, the facility renders its ser-vice with space availability andemergency basis only. Once ayear, I go to the VA for followup medical evaluations for myservice-connected disability. Most often, the two mentionedfacilities cannot accommodateme with my urgent medicalneeds. Therefore, I would goto a civilian medical facility.Fortunately, Tri-care for Lifewould pick up my co-pay andMedicare would pay for therest. Like other enlisted retired,my retainer’s pay is not small but not big either. I earned itwith pride which Uncle Samrecompensed me by virtue of my length of service, doing
“dirty works” and sacrifices.
In view of the current eco-nomic condition plus the
spiraling inflation, I would facefinancial adversity like hitting
a solid brick wall. Addition-ally, my monthly mortgage payment, high energy cost andwater bills along with other essential needs are enormous.Often, I would count my loosechange in cabinet drawers, van-ity counters or trouser’s pocketso I can remit my co-pay with acivilian drug store for my spe-cial hypertension and allergymedications. I am 69 years old.I still work as a part-time musi-cian so I can live comfortably.Well, others may think thatthis new Tri-Care proposalcame to surface perhaps, just anaive political ploy to destroyor seemingly, to taint others. Ihope it is just a pondit’s word. Nevertheless, I want to be fair.Let’s give the new administra-tion the chance to work for itsadvocacy to change. In fact, Iapplaud its efforts to rescue andstimulate the sagging economy, solve the unemployment is-sues, home foreclosures, etc. However, within the economicconceptual graphs, does changemean to include”tinkering” thehard-earned military retirees
Tri-Care benefits? If this is
so, I feel the military is being punished for the fault of othersin a way that the governmentwants to garnish back the givengratitude. I thought this wasUncle Sam’s honorable gesture,a “thank you compensation” for
“lifer’s” military sacrifices.
Low and Behold! We areshaken! We are under du-ress! When the nation is under duress, we were always there! Now, someone help us please! It is imminent that the unthink-able disaster may happen. Itappears that resource and hopefor change is not going to be athand, the least, for the retired
military. Why tread on us? If
this negative change happens,it will deliver a potential blowto the entire military commu-nity. This will certainly ignite ashocking spark to the majorityof us who can barely make it.Furthermore, this will trigger amilitary avalanche and retirees’revolt for immediate change. Moreover, this will give anegative message and moraleimpact to those dedicated menand women who are currentlyin harms way. With this, wouldthey be further willing to stay
in?
I realize our nation like othersis confronted with economic
difficulties. In the interim,
as we transcend through thisenormous challenge, let’s work together to pick up the broken pieces thrown and scattered
about the fields. Again, I echo
the “Chief’s word, “Yes, wecan!” Together, let’s pave a
level-playing field through
other alternatives and innova-tions. Let us utilize the mostable thinkers-technocrats whowere hand-picked to excel intheir specialties. And while
we are one diversified peoples
rebuilding our shattered nation, you lead us accordingly Mr.President. Most importantly, your careful review of this veryimportant matter to the militaryis greatly appreciated. As our chosen Commander-in-Chief,lead us to courageously defeatour enemy. Please look behindyou, we are not your enemy! We are on your side. Therefore,I request, do not allow any-one to tinker with the Military
Retirees Tri-Care benefits.
Thanks a whole lot to you andGod bless this great nation.Respectfully yours, LICS McKing Alanis, Jr.USN (Retired)
