DICCIONARIO FUNCIONAL.

IntroductionThis dictionary has as its basic purpose to bea didactic complement to the teachingmaterials presented in the book Quechua. ATeaching Manual, by the same author. Inaddition to this basic objective, this bookwill be equally important for readers of different backgrounds, including nativeQuechua speakers in general, as well asprofessionals interested in this language andthose interested in the culture of Quechua-speaking communities. The main entries of this book are, exclusively, the ones that are employed inthe lessons of the book mentioned above. Each main entry is followed by sub-entriesthat serve to form a related group of words. This cluster of terms will help the reader tounderstand the semantic field of the mainentry and, at the same time, will serve as areminder of the Quechua vocabularyincluded in the textbook. These sub-entriesare included on the basis of the associationof ideas, the similarity of forms, and thecomplementation or contrast of meaningsbetween the words within each entry. The main entries comprise not only theQuechua roots, but also words that haveroots plus a suffix or suffixes that haveacquired semantic independence to stand asautonomous entities. Thus,
 Rimay
, ‘to talk.’and
 Rimapakuy
, ‘to mumble,’ have enoughsemantic autonomy which allows thesewords to appear as main entries. We expect to offer, in the future, anadditional book to increase the number of terms presented in this dictionary beyondthose occurring in the textbook mentionedabove.Examples of the use of the dictionary areoffered within a Quechua utterancetranslated to English. This translation, indiverse degree, follows the order of thewords used in Quechua in as far as it doesnot disrupt the understanding and thestructure of the English language. (In thesame manner, a translation to Spanish isincluded as well). In order to read this book easily, see belowthe section
Structure of each dictionaryentry
.Appendices I and II present, respectively, anEnglish-Quechua and Spanish-Quechualisting of all entries of this dictionary. Thisfeature will help to locate the correspondingQuechua term in the main section of thisbook. Appendix III offers an alphabeticallist of the Quechua suffixes which is a usefulresource for helping to understand themeaning of some entries. The social status which Quechua has in thecountries where it is spoken has contributedto the belief that it is not possible to saycertain ideas and that the Quechua languagecannot be used to describe the changes thatnecessarily happen in society. This workattempts to overcome this perception andurges Quechua speakers and students tocontinue trying with even more energy toexpress all types of concepts in Quechua. At the same time, it is important to developa Quechua metalanguage in order to dealwith academic topics with much more ease.In this sense, this book is an invitation toQuechua-speaking intellectuals to criticallyevaluate these terms according to their ownnative judgements and intuitions to makefuture works more exhaustive and to further
